Severed Feet Washing Ashore in Vancouver Area

Remains of sixth foot found in British Columbia

Since last August, six severed feet have washed ashore in the Vancouver area. They are now concentrating efforts on a plane crash from a few years ago and have asked the family members to supply DNA.

It just seems strange that all but one of the feet have been right feet. Quite macabre *shivers*

Freaky

Very strange! You would think after a few years everything would be decomposed.

That is VERY creepy!

They claim to be focusing on a plane crash from a few years ago, but there were only 4 people on that plane. So where the 5th right foot come from, and the recent left one, is weird!

I have been watching this, I think it is really creepy , so far they haven't been able to match the DNA of missing persons.

Good point! This is really a mystery..

If the plane crash was a few years ago, I don't think there would be anything left, especially if they were washed up on shore. The fish would have pretty much devored them.

Wow...sounds like a CSI episode. You're right...that's creepy!

I have been reading about this and just find it freaky. Why always one foot? If it were from a plane crash, they would be so decomposed from the water that there would be nothing left.

Something unusual is going on....

I agree.

One of the news channels actually showed a zoom photo of the latest foot in a sneaker. A witness described it as a male's foot in a black sneaker and there was about 4 inches of exposed bone at the top of the foot so it hadn't been cut off. And apparently there was flesh on the foot. So how it could be from a submerged plane from 3 years ago is beyond me.

I wonder if they'll ever get to the bottom of it?

I just saw on the news that the most recent found left foot was a hoax. Apparently someone put an animal foot into a sneaker to get attention.

However, that still doesn't address the fact that the plane crash they think the other feet are coming from, only had 4 passengers and that it is 5 right feet that have been found.

This whole thing is sure a mystery.

I think the fifth right foot was the hoax, was it not -- they already had a left when this one turned up? That's the way I understood the reports at any rate.

I just saw on Global TV news that it was the most recent foot, which was a left foot, while all the others have been right feet, was the hoax. The others are legitimate human feet.

Yes, I understood that the others were all legitimate human feet, but was under the impression that it was one of those 5 which was the left, not this latest, which I understood to be a right. I must have misunderstood the count.

ETA: It does appear that the left was the one found on Monday, and was human

The 6th foot, which is the last foot found, was a hoax.

A sixth foot found washed ashore on the B.C. coast has been denounced by the BC Coroners Service as a hoax.

A provincial forensic pathologist and an anthropologist have examined the remains found inside a running shoe Wednesday morning by a beachcomber collecting rocks in Campbell River on Vancouver Island.

They determined that what was originally thought to be a human foot was actually the skeleton of an animal paw, which was inserted into a black Adidas shoe, along with a sock and packed with dried seaweed, the coroners service announced Thursday.

Investigators believe the foot was deliberately put there by pranksters.

My mistake. However, it's still pretty bizzar that the left foot does not match DNA of the other feet, so they have 5 different feet but no bodies to go with any of them.

Now that is just absolutely creepy

I highly doubt they would be from that plane crash - I mean, it was 3 or 4 years ago, so the flesh would have been completely decomposed or eaten, and why are they all washing ashore NOW? Definitely weird on many levels.

It really is creepy!

Once they get it solved, we'll probably be seeing an episode of Law and Order or CSI dedicated to it! LOL

Here is an update.

Apparently one of the right feet found matches the left foot that was found last month.

They still don't have an identity though.

I read that wearing tight fitting shoes like sneakers can prevent the foot decomposing at the same rate as the rest of the body, and since sneakers are quite buoyant it means they can float to shore.

You guys in BC already went through that horrible Pig Farmer thing and now feet. Ewww.

Oh yeah! That pig farmer incident was so gross. Apparently he was having people over and serving them meals made from the flesh of the women he killed. He also would donate food he made to charities.

I had not known that. Yep pretty gross. That is one of the most horrible crimes in recent years. I felt sorry for the families of the victims. These girls may have been living a rough life but no one deserves that kind of death.

Actually, they have washed ashore on Vancouver Island. Vancouver the city is on the mainland.

Anybody want to go beach combing with me?

Thanks! I'd love to! But I think I already have plans that day!

Well, not that this isn't a disturbing enough topic... but...

Is this area the sort with very cold waters (at deep levels)? Maybe few large scavengers?

In cold water, with sufficient cover, a body will be shielded from many scavengers. (small fish and maybe larger fish/sharks/etc may not identify a shoe as food with a test bite and will let it go). The cold keeps most agents of decomposition at bay and the body will undergo saponification (turning into fatty acids - a adipocere or 'grave wax' ). With no air present (which would start true decomp) this process slowing preserves the 'flesh'. It can even allow some features to be made out in many cases.

It's nasty, but it's possible that something resembling skin was still in the shoes.

Now, as to when they think this happened, came from, who knows.
