losing hair

my cat has been losing hair for several months now. doctor thinks it could be stress, but his life hasn't changed and lives the good life. so they think maybe food alergies. I feed him Nutro MaxCat wet food and Chicken Soup for Cat Lovers Soul dry food. So they tell me to buy $2 cans of IAMS Skin and & Coat Veterinary Formula. Does anyone know anything about this food? I've always been under the impression IAMS is garbage? Why is this vet recommending it? Is my food no good? This IAMS has lamb by product in it.

Has he had bloodwork done to rule out a thyroid problem?

no blood test, it's all in patches so doc thinks it's over grooming
