Bunny serial killer(s) [WARNING: Disturbing]

This is so bizarre. At least the police are taking it seriously enough to have formed a task force.
Beheaded Bunnies:String of Brutal Rabbit Murders...

This speculation gives food for thought:

There is even speculation that the criminal or criminals could be using Google Earth to find victims, Schütte says, explaining that the computer program, which lets users examine detailed satellite photographs, might be powerful enough to allow hutches to be located in people's gardens. "We aren't discounting anything at this point."

Why aren't people moving their rabbits into the house? I can understand if you don't want rabbits inside, but at least lock them in the basement or something for a little while until this crap stops...

I imagine most of them are indoor/outdoor pets. Rabbits are really popular in Germany, a landlords can't forbid them, like they can dogs and in many instances cats, and I've noticed that a lot of people have outdoor hutches where they'll put them for a few hours a day, or at night when the weather is hot during the day.

I read your post about the cat, and I couldn't find the words to reply. After reading about the cats too, could it be rogue "animal rights" people? I mean, honestly, this doesn't sound like killings from people that just enjoy torturing animals, but it sounds like people that want to send a message.

If they just wanted to torture animals, there are enough stray animals, they shouldn't have to steal bunnies out of their hutches and kill them. It's like someone is trying to make a point (a very sick point). And, by cutting their heads off...that actually is a merciful way of killing them (I'm not in any way saying it wasn't painful, but it is more merciful than torturing them for days on end). This whole thing is just strange.

I find some of the speculation in that article to be ridiculous. Most likely it's just a small group of people doing it for no other reason then because it gets them attention - otherwise the rabbits would have been stolen.

People need to learn to protect their pets, sadly. Lock them up, add motion sensor lights, don't leave them out when your not able to watch them, etc. What about any sort of neighborhood watch? Someone has to have seen something.

DH and I have actually thought about how we will redesign our turtle pens after we move. Depending the neighborhood we move to we may have to add lids, locks, lights, and if I worry enough - cheap security cameras. I've read too many stories of peoples pet turtles and tortoises being stolen and tortured. (Why would anyone want to set a tortoise on fire?!!) The same for the cats if they can have an outdoor enclosure - it will be locked.
