I thought that the very first ingredient of a good dry cat food was supposed to be meat. In my quest to find a food that both cats can eat I have seen a ton of foods that the first ingredient is say chicken meal. What exactly is chicken meal?

Chicken meal is actually better than chicken.
Meal is basically the meat with the moisture removed.
This actually means more meat by volume since there is no water adding to the precooked weight.

Make sense?

I think that an ideal food might have Chicken and then Chicken Meal as the first two ingredients, giving the fresh meat and the high meat content meal (minus moisture) as the first two ingredients.

No such thing really as fresh meat in commercial diets, it all gets cooked down anyway

Most of the dry foods that I'll buy have chicken, chicken meal, or both listed though.
What matters to cats is that it's meat protein.

Arlyn gave the easy decription... 5lbs of fresh chicken cooked down = 1 lb chicken meal

Meal is GREAT in dry food why it is in some wet s makes no sence to me
