I have to wonder how many veterans of earlier wars suffered from what we recognize today as PTSD. They suffered in silence without help.

I had a great-uncle who fought in WWI, and came back "shell-shocked". He spent the rest of his life in a VA hospital psychiatric ward.

PTSD was recognized, but there was little understanding of how to treat it.

Good point.

My father fought in WWII, he is going to be 85 years old next month, he still, to this day, has nightmares on a very regular basis, as in, almost nightly. He screams and yells and throws punches.
