Just an update...

My mom is set to have open heart surgery Tuesday morning at 7:30am.
My sister, brother, aunt, niece, nephew are all driving down here Monday to be here when she goes in.
Of course I will be there, so will alot of my other family here in Florida.

I know they said having a valve replaced is an everyday procedure but still.... it's my mom.

This is the first time in 17 years that all of us kids will be together!
Christmas of 1990 was the last time we have all seen each other at once.
There will be 3 generations of us.

My mother has been there for all of us for the last 40 years (my brother is 40) and now it's our turn to be there for her!

Can I get vibes that all goes well and she has a quick recovery?

Prayers for your Mom. My Dad had a Triple Bypass on Friday Jan 13 2006. I know how you are feeling. If you ever need someone to talk to pm me. We live 2 hours from my Dad and the Kaiser he was in.

sending & .
bright side - you get to see everyone!
my dad had either triple or quadruple bypass surgery several years ago. he was older than your mom, i think [maybe around the same age?] anyway, he did fine. he's also had several procedures since [stints, etc.]. it's amazing what they can do now - both his father & grandfather died young from heart attacks. he obviously inherited their tendency.

I hope the surgery goes well. Is she in good spirits?? A positive attitude goes a long way.
Having lots of family together with her will be a great morale booster.

My mom had a valve replaced this past April. She is doing fine. Her recovery has been slower due to her age.

for your Mom and
for you.

Alycia, good luck to your mother. I assume that she will be getting an artificial, a Titanium, valve because she is so young. DH had one put in after he collapsed at back-to-school night when our daughter was a senior in HS - 3 1/2 years ago. The fastest gun in the West has been replaced by the fastest cell phone.

Anyway, the operation went fine, along with a bypass. Just don't be scared when you see your mother right after the operation. DH had all sorts of tubes, most of which they took out fairly quickly.

A bonus to DH's "clicker" (I can hear the valve click when I put my head to his chest) is that we have to be hand searched at the airport. He does, but all of us get to go to the top of the regular line because there is no wait for the hand search once you say you need one (well, that is how it works for us).

Just trying to make you feel better before Tues am. Good luck to all.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the surgery went well

She is in alot of pain right now so they're keeping her pretty sedated

She keeps saying she wants to go home and that she hates the nurses

Tomorrow they're taking her chest tubes out and she will be more comfortable
Right now she can't sleep and they have her sitting up in a chair. After they take the tubes out she will be able to lay down.
I am going to see her for a little while tomorrow w/o my family. She wants to spend some time with me alone.

Thank you all for the prayers and vibes!

I just found this thread, and I'm SO glad everything went ok. Yeah, she's going to be uncomfortable for a while but if she's saying she hates the nurses she's doing good (no offense to any nurses here!).

I'm glad you are going to get a chance to see her by yourself. Having everyone around is great support, but it can get exhausting for the patient.

Sitting up in a chair is a good thing. The nurses made DH do that ASAP. The longer she can sit up, the faster the recovery and the faster she can come home. So happy that your mom is able to sit up. It is a really big thing.

Such good news! It's true that sitting up will speed things along, and if your mom already has the energy to be feisty about the nurses, that's probably a very good sign.
Wishing her a quick and easy recovery...

I told her the other day before the surgery and she was very thankful for all the prayers and vibes

I went and seen her today and as much as I hate to say it, she looks horrible

She was in so much pain I could barely stand to be there

She has apparently been using some colorful words with the nurses

They told me that she also likes to show them her bird

If you knew my mother, you would know she is NOT like that!
I was floored at where she told the nurse she could shove the pillow today

But I have to say it was funny

She is NOT a good patient at all!

I'm so glad to hear that all went well with your Mother surgery.

My MIL had a triple by-pass and had a valve replaced a few years ago.
I know what you mean about not looking good...it really bothered me that my MIL looked just awful...but within a few days she looked like herself again.

Like someone else said, if she's talking back to the nurses then she's on the road to recovery.

I'll keep you all in my thoughts and Prayers.
