I have been feeding my cats new food and their poop is smelling horrible! I have never had this problem with the old food I was feeding them ( an all dry diet- Nutro) Now they are getting a mixture of wet and dry (Wellness wet x2 daily, and a mixture of Orijin and Wellness Core during the day)
I was wondering if this will be an on going problem? Or are the cats just adjusting to the new food? Or Is this what happens when cats eat wet daily? I was thinking I could start cleaning their boxes out more frequently, but I dont know if this would really solve the problem since I keep their boxes pretty darn clean. Also, I have not noticed any actual diahrreah. Just stinky poop.

Introducing canned food shouldn't cause much of a problem for most cats.

I think the problem here is that Orijen and Wellness Core are very different foods than whatever variety of Nutro that you were feeding. They are both high protein, low carb foods --- much richer than Nutro. It's possible that your cats simply cannot handle the richness. This is not uncommon, and seems to happen most often with a similar food --- EVO.

Or, you might have switched foods too quickly. Uusally that manifests itself with diarrhea, which you said they don't have, but it could also lead to smellier waste. Did you go very slowly, or was it more like Nutro one day, Wellness Core and Orijen the next? The recommended approach is to mix 25% new with 75% old for a few days, then 50%/50%, then 75% new 25% old, and finally 100% new. The process should take anywhere from 2-4 weeks, depending upon how you choose to define "a few days" and how your cats take to the new food.

i know if i feed too rich of a dry, Cable will get the runs. never fails - she obviously has a 'sensitive' tummy!

I might have switched too quickly...but the question is... will it eventuall stop? I have also noticed that my cats have been shedding like MADDDD! I know it is shedding season, but this is much more excessive that it has ever been in the past.

I am seriously tempted to put them back on their old food cause I really had no problem with it, but i changed it because I wanted more healthy food.

What do I do??

I would go back to the old food.. and then in a few weeks try again...

In my house it took several trys to get the grain free she liked , could handle without stool or smell issues and I liked

Just curious, but which grain-free food did you end up going with?
I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my Orijen. My cat didn't take to the Wellness Core at all. Even when I only put one kernel in her bowl with the rest of her usual food she refused to touch any of it.
Silly cats!

I use Orijen, they love it!!

I think its really important to wean in new foods, i took 6 weeks to wean Betula off yukky felix and onto natures menu. She had been on that food for 3 years, think a sudden change will upset tums!

I took only a few days but I did wean my cats off of the dry and onto the wet. Basically what I did was give them one in the morning and one at night until I was out of dry food. They seem to have adjusted well. Actually Amadeus' hinny looks a lot better already, and I have noticed less "skid marks" on the carpet! I am watching them all carefully but if you feel like trying a different food switch them slowly.

Just think about if you eat something you don't normally eat. Doesn't it mess you up a bit?

Good luck with your furbabies!!!
