Can you change a cats behaviour towards another person?

I adopted my cat from an animal shelter about 2 years ago when my husband was in Iraq. She was roughly 4 months old when I got her. She's an indoor cat, as there are way too many coyotes where I live. For the first 9 months her whole world revolved around me, as we have no children. My husband didn't come home for 9 months after I got her.
She doesn't seem to like my husband, and we have no idea why. I thought it was jealousy at first, but now a year and a half later, I'm not so sure.
The only time she's ever been 'nice' to him was when she had a fentanyl pain patch after surgery, within 2 days of it coming off she was back to her usual self with him. She runs away from him, and hisses at him, and just generally has no time for him at all. It's so strange, because for the most part she's a really lovely little cat.
Are there any suggestions as to how I can help her to accept my husband? He's really good with her, so it's not his attitude or temper towards her that's causing it. I'm at my wits end.
One other thing, she's pretty scared of other people too, when other people enter our home she runs and hides in the closet.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh, that's really too bad, but not necessarily forever. The key is lots of patience, and some shared (with you) feeding chores. There's no guarantee that it'll work, but if he has the time, it's certainly worth the effort. There are some cats who are just one-person pets and hard to change, but give it time. Also, it's probably a good idea if he doesn't wear big boots around the house as they can be scary to a little cat, as can smelly shampoo or aftershave!

Thanks Larke. I'm a first time cat owner, so I don't understand what makes them tick. I just know I love her (and my hubby) to bits and would love to have peace and harmony between them!!!

Does she respond this way to other people too? It really just sounds like she's very unsocialized - except with you. Don't blame yourself, it can happen - I have one that growls at strangers and even the neighbors when they're outside in their yard.

Does she like wet food? Any treats? And does she have a feeding schedule?
If she does like wet food, either have him feed one of her wet food meals to her daily or set a schedule so he can do that. If you don't feed her any wet food, consider it as it is good for kitties.
And although this isn't the best suggestion, if she begs let him share a little of his food with her (as long as it's safe food, no garlic for example). Cats are very motivated by food, and if people can tame ferals with food it's not as far of a stretch for your husband to get your skittish cat more used to him.

I would say have him leave some of his dirty laundry down on the floor, but having a husband myself, I suspect your's may do that already.
For some reason, my younger cat Tomas loves my husband's stinky socks... but isn't as fond of him as he is me (Tomas is a momma's boy
).

Tell your husband he needs to help scoop the litter box, too!

i've heard that, in addition to having him feed her, he should place a sweaty t-shirt under her food dishes, so she starts to associate his smell w/something good.

^ coachlover is going to come back to check her thread and wonder if we're advocating letting her husband leave his dirty clothes all over the house.

I was going to suggest she try wearing one of his tee's in the evening when it's calmer so that her cat associate his smell with something she knows and trusts, but wasn't sure if coachlover would want to wear a sweaty tee.

Thank you all, you made me giggle at the very least! Yes my husband does leave his dirty clothes around: the living room, spare bedroom, master bathroom, office.....need I go on???!!!
I will certainly try putting one of his tshirts on myself, and putting an item of his clothing under her food bowl. Not his socks though......poor cat would be traumatized.
She does eat wet food, twice daily. And she has dry food 'on tap' as it were.
He does feed her, and has actually changed her litter tray recently as I had surgery!
Someone asked if she behaves the same with other people as she does with my hubby. The answer to that is: yes she does. I have friends who will go in my room to try and find her and she'll hiss at them. If I don't get there at the same time as them I always try to stroke and reassure her, and then tell them that it's best that she's left alone, because she is so obviously frightened. It's like I'm the only person she trusts or something.
Do you think there is a possibility she was hurt before I got her? I hate to think it, but there are so many hateful people out there....

I nearly forgot, she doesn't so much beg as 'help herself' to whatever food is on my plate . She absolutely loves strawberry yoghurt, chocolate milkshake, not to mention asparagus.
I know, I know, that's disgusting. But she looks so sweet....you know that 'big wide dilated pupils' look they get. I can't resist. Aren't I pathetic?
