We just got back from the 8th grade and HS graduation at our son's (who's in 7th grade) school. They presented awards for the kids in grades 6-12. Ben got an award for reading but he did not know that he was getting a plaque from the SF Symphony for winning their art contest. All the kids who participated in the art contests got their participants awards, and then another 7th grader, Veronica, got her "one-of-25" semi-finalist award (she is very artistic and helps Ben when they do Origami - I think he has a crush on her, she is a cutie). But he still didn't know about the big award. Then they called up Ben. Boy, was he surprised and happy!

The school is so small that there were 12 8th-grade graduates (all boys!) and 13 HS grads (2 girls). The counselor that works with the High Schoolers prepared something to say about all of them and summed them up with a word or two that best describes them. She asked the parents to stand up to honor them, too. Even though the kids might have some behavioral problems, they have stayed to graduate, which is something. For many, just getting on the bus and to school was a big deal. One who got on the bus had perfect attendance his last year. His word was "perserverance." Another realized that she was smart and won all the academic honors, including one for taking algebra and geometry in the same year. Her words were "brilliant" and "thoughtful."

There was a guy who composed, played, and mixed the music to go with the slide presentation. His word was "artistic." Another ran the 400 m in 47.2, which puts him in the top 5 in CA and the top 10 in the nation. He is going to a community college first but UCLA has expressed "an interest."
His word was "competitive." Ya think?

It was just so great to hear about all their accomplishments. Congrats to Marchus School Class of 2008.

The best was the speech that the senior speaker made. In short, he said that he set out to prove to everyone that he was going to fail and tried everything to do so. The counselors talked to him and he came to believe that it was him that had to make a decision to stay, not others, and he did. Great speech!
Made you just want to
