My sister is visiting me this week, which should be wonderful. Except tonight her 12 yr old dog Sadie had a very scary episode. This is the second such occurance in two weeks. last time she spent the night at the ER vet and they thought she had enteritis.

Well tonight it turns out she has a very large tumor attached to her spleen. She is severely anemic and it is looking like she has an hemangiosarcoma. This is very very bad.

If she can make through surgery she will have up to 2 months left.

I managed to get my sister on the first flight out tomorrow morning. We have to leave here at 3:30 am to get to the airport by 7:00am.

We could really use the famous TCS vibes to help Sadie girl hang on so her Mom and get home to her. Sadie is her heart dog ( the black one in the photo) Teyah is Sadie's partner in crime and my sisters soul dog. This is so hard for her being 1200 miles away from home and not knowing if her girl is going to make it through the night.

Yes, that is very sad. I have seen dogs live 2 years after a splenectomy, but at her age, I don't know. Age isn't a disease, but I guess you have to factor in how the rest of her body is holding up, and how sick she is right now. If she makes it through the surgery, the next 24-48 hours are crucial. I hope whatever decision she makes, she is at peace with it. Being a vet tech, I personally wouldn't put my dog through it, if she were that old. I've seen it go both ways though. Good luck to your sister.

Hopefully your sister will make it home safely and be there for Sadie.

Thank you everyone.
Once again TCS vibes and prayers worked. My sister made it home this evening and got to spend some time with Sadie who was very happy to see her Mom.

The long term prognosis looks very bleak. Sadie is calm and in no pain. She went for a little walk to go out to the bathroom. Her blood count is still dropping and she is not stable enough for surgery. They are hoping that with some clotting factors overnight that she will stabilize enough to spend a couple of days at home. If the clotting factors don't work Sadie will be gently euthanized tomorrow evening.

Hemangiosarcoma is most incidious and brutal. My heart felt sympathy for Sadie, your sister and your family. Here is a link which helped me to understand, perhaps it will be helpful for you also. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...iosarcoma.html

We lost our heart dog Chloe, (she was 13.5 years) a day after Thanksgiving 2007. She had both the Spleen and Heart Hemangiosarcoma. From the first time something was suspected to be wrong, to the diagnosis, to her death was a little over two weeks.

Please know that my thoughts are with you and with Sadie. Glad her Mom made it back to see her.
