Hi all,

My fosters are about 4 weeks old (with mom) and I'm thinking about what litter to offer and when. I heard that clumping litter is bad--does this apply to something like swheatscoop as well? What type would you recommend and when?

Right now mom has clumping clay litter. Should I take out her box and replace it with a non-clumping kind or is there no risk of them using her box since it's about 3" high? She does tend to get litter on the floor.

Also, will mom basically take care of everything as far as training them goes? Or will I have to put them in the box?

This is where the fun begins LOL. What I did with my fosters was gave the mom clumping until the babies were ready to be trained. Then, I went ahead and gave the babies their own box with just regular litter because they tend to eat it for a few days. I didn't give momma the chance to train them herself, cuz I needed them trained. Once the babies have stopped eating it, I introduced clumping (so much easier to clean and less foot baths for the babies LOL). I had them fully potty trained by 4 weeks, and it's a blessing. I showed them how to dig and always put them in the box after they ate. It was pretty easy.

Good luck and have fun

There is a product called Kitten Attract by Dr Elsy and I use that with mine. They were 5 and 6 weeks and went on their own. I think the attract has something to do with it.
