The Rules of Attraction (2002)

Sometimes a movie will come along that works on many different levels, but then totally fails over all. The Rules of Attraction is that very film. It's kind of sad really. This film has some camera work that is so totally impressive that it made me grab my remote and go back just so I could see the scene again. The director uses split scenes, and rewound motion to tell his story. Trust me, it's worth watching just to see what he's going to do next.

However, the movie still doesn't work, because I just don't care about the characters. They are all emotionally void to the point where I stop paying attention to the dialog and started paying attention to the camera work. In a nut shell Rules is about a love triangle in a small New England college. However, the three main principles involved know very little about each other, and what they do know is based on their on conjecture. Lauren Hynde (played by Shannyn Sossamon) is in love with Victor. She thinks that he's going to be a strong caring man. He's so far from that it's laughable. Sean Bateman is in love with Lauren because she's innocent. Again, she's so far from innocent she'd make a lady of the night blush. Paul Denton is in love with Sean because he thinks he's gay. He's wrong. So wrong he can't see past it. Now that you've felt the theme you can see how incepted the some of the dialog really is. For example, "Rock and Roll. Deal with it."

That line wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't repeated in ALMOST EVERY SINGLE MAJOR SCENE.

Is this movie worth renting? Sure. If you are film buff. Other than that don't waste your time. Also, this movie is rated R. It's a hard R. No one under 17 should really see it. Trust me on this one.

I liked the book v. much.
It reminded me of when I was in college (written around the same time too)

I did see the movie - and couldnt stop comparing it to the book - which means it felt flat for me. If I saw it with no pre-knowledge I have no idea what I would have thought of it.
