I have one of those. Most work. We have had neighbors who were robbed - one had their car parked in the driveway and the golf clubs in the trunk were taken - but not us.

If they're where they think they won't be seen then of course they will!

That's a little more scary... You should do up a note about it, photocopy it and put it in all the letterboxes in your street so everyone is aware and keeps an eye out.

Yikes, I'd be really, really concerned since your neighbor had a break-in. Time for some offensive action, be it a security system, extra locks, very large dog, but something.

my boyfriends parents know how you feel! They woke up a couple of mornings ago to find a footprint on their deck in mud and no one has feet as big as this one and someone had taken the hose and put it in the car and turned it on....his poor dad had 2 feet of water in the car it's a good thing he had power windows so they had to put the hose through the door so as it was filling up there was always some leaking out since the door wasn't fully closed..

it's terrible now a days that people don't have respect for others property..

That is very creepy. Keep the cig butts in a plastic bag, try not to touch them and put your prints on them, use something else to pick them up and place them in the bag. That is evidence. File a police report to have something on record. No telling what that individual was up to, and your wife could have came home when that person was there and the situation could have became dangerous. The type of people that usually break and enter a home aren't the safest people to have in your home, I would try to set up a web cam or some cheap way of having surveillance in your home, or go the more expensive route. Also make your door locks stronger and get a dog sign (for instance, just a sign with a picture of a Rott or something - like those ones that say Rotts are like potato chips, can't just have one) and put that up for all to see, or maybe attack cat sign even
Alarms are good.

It would make me extremely uncomfortable and uneasy to know someone felt comfortable enough to come into my house and smoke, that they felt comfortable enough to break and enter, I would be taking steps to protect you, your wife, and your cats, the things that matter. Harmless or not, the actions of breaking and entering and smoking in your home while you are there say all I need to know, and I would take this situation seriously. If they were casing your home, they will get bolder.

Do you have any preteens/young teenagers as fairly close neighbors? Two butts next to an air conditioning unit make me think somebody may have been sneaking a smoke outside of adults' line of vision.

I know our neighbors' kids did it around our house when they were 11 and 13, respectively.
