Last night my partner and I went to our first Cats Protection meeting to see about becoming foster parents. Well it looks like we've been accepted as they're going to start getting equipment together for us to foster kittens and we should hear from them next week I think. I didn't realise there were so few volunteers in my area, yet there are so many cats being given up or that are feral.
I reckon I'm going to get kittens that need socialising because I'm at home a lot due to my illness and so have the time to be scratched to death.

Also, my almost 3 year old cat hasn't been vaccinated recently because he's an indoor cat although he had a check up at the vets. Shall I get his injections sorted if I'm going to be bringing little terrors into the house? Jupiter isn't due for his until September so he should be ok although I'd better stock up on Frontline.

Any fostering advice is welcome!!!!

Congratulations on becoming a foster mom! I just started fostering last fall and it's been very rewarding. I would recommend getting your 3 year old vaccinated before bringing any other ones in--you could bring in something from the other cats or even from outside.

Thanks! I'm buying a new cat carrier today so I can take Fable to the vets for his vaccinations before we get any new cats in the house, he's too big for the old one...

So how hard is it to give up the cats then? I looked after Fable's litter mates and mum for 2 weeks and gave them all back no problem...except for Fable
, it was a relief as there were 8 kittens in that litter! I'm wondering how many kittens of cats I'm going to want to keep for myself
.

I found it hard to give up my first foster but after that it got easier. If you have the attitude that these aren't your cats, you're just holding them for a while then it's easier.
I think of what's best for them and that's a home of their own. The other thing to consider is every foster you adopt out means another one gets saved when you rescue it. Right now I have a mom and 4 adorable kittens, I'd love to keep them all but I already have 3 of my own!

Thank you for the advice, I think that's a good way of thinking about it. I hope all your fosters find good homes soon!
