This may be sort of a strange question but I want a few opinions before I scribble all over a book

Im giving a friend one of my favorite books (Tolstoy), its nothing impressive, just an old paperback and the back cover looks a bit like the dog chewed on it but its special to me and thats what counts. My thought was that it would be a "thanks for being such a good friend" gift. I was thinking of putting "To remember me by" along with a few other lines in the front, but does that sound weird, like a farewell gift?
I know I know, I should be able to figure this out by myself

Oh that is a good one, but I already sort of already have what I wanted to say for the rest of it figured out (including a (probably) bad joke about it being used as a coaster). Hmm, now Ill have to think about it. So Im guessing the first bit I asked about doesnt sound so good?
