We are fostering a 3.5 month old beagle puppy...CUTE AS CAN BE!! We have her only until Tuesday (since Friday) for socialization reasons as she is wary of humans.

She stays in her crate and when I bring her out to see how she does, she runs underneath out antique tea-table. And let me tell you, there is not much space between the bottom of that table and the floor, but she squeezes under it.

When I try to hold her, she will LITERALLY stay in the position I set her on my lap in. If I put her up on my chest, she stays there. I swear if the dog could go without breathing, she would do that, too. And tremble! OMG. She has gotten a *TAD* better, but sometimes, I can literally see her whole body shake...as if she were an elderly person with shaky hands or something (I can't recall the condition name to make reference to it).

I thought maybe it was my loud 3 year old contributing to this, but when out in our backyard (fenced it, of course), this puppy is in her glory!!! She wags her tail.....trots around..sniffs all the smells...and will completely follow us around the yard. I tested her and walked behind the shed and in corners of the fenced areas..and there she went behind me. She doesn't like it when you follow her, but she will follow you. And she had grown to LOVEEEE my 2 year old and even my 3 year old a bit. But my husband and I?? Not so much. Sure, she follows outside, but that is about it.

Once inside again, she retreats to the nearest hiding spot and is like afraid of EVERYONE and EVERYTHING. It is like it is an inside-thing.

The puppy has two siblings who were just the same, but I guess, after a few days in a foster home, they are now fine. This one...I just don't know about. From what I was told, they were apparently "strays" or something. The person that brought them in had to trap them to get them. At least, that is what I was told.

I've tried treats and everything...and it just isn't loosening this girl up inside.

Any other ideas or is this just the way she is???

I'll move this to the Cats and Other Animals forum. Our dog owners often visit here.

It sounds like she either has never been indoors or has had very bad expiriences while indoors. The best thing to do it to give her a safe place to hide and let her come out on her own terms. If and when she comes out, make sure you have treats for her to show her that its a good thing to be out of hiding. Whatever you do, don't pick her up and bring her everywhere you go. This can cause seperation anxiety. (I learned that the hard way with my siberian husky) A puppy's curious nature will get the best of them and she will come out sooner or later. She will just take some time...

I agree with all the above. Just give her time, she's likely been bounced a lot & is not used to humans.
