DH and I have a pretty extensive music collection and decided that this Memorial Day weekend, we were going to play our favorite artists that are no longer with us. To qualify, at least 1 band member must be gone. Who are your favorite deceased musicians?

Right now we've got the Ramones cranked up loud. We're working thru the following list:

Bob Marley
Jimmy Hendrix
The Doors
Janis Joplin
The Beatles
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Warren Zevon
Muddy Waters
Lynard Skynard
The Who
The Clash

We also have a boxed set of New Orleans music. While a lot of the people in that collection are still alive, New Orleans will never be what it was after Katrina. In a sense, the city died that day.

Here are a few others:

Nirvana (Kurt Cobain)
Alice in Chains (Layne Staley)
Frank Zappa
Chicago (Terry Kath)
The Allman Brothers (Duane Allman & Berry Oakley)
The Rolling Stone (Brian Jones)
Johnny Cash

I'm glad to see there are other rockers out there. I was at a party last night, and most the people were under 25, and all they listen to are that R&B/hip-hop crap. I was pulling my hair out. I cranked the Ramones and Skynyrd all the way home in my truck for therapy!

Good bands! The only group we don't have in your list is Alice in Chains. Time to pull out more CD's!

Absolutely do. And people fought and died to keep our culture alive, one of which is music. I know its a stretch.

I realize its supposed to be in memory of veterans. But I like to use it as a day to honor all the deceased- veterans or not....

While I see your point, I can't find myself agreeing with it. I guess if your keeping in the forefront of your mind the service men and women who died selflessly for our country and our freedoms, while you celebrate the life work of your favorite deceased musicians, I suppose it's all good.

Soldiers died so some of the musicians you have mentioned could have the right and freedom to protest wars, sing anti-war songs and basically malign the people who were dying to protect their rights.

Maybe tomorrow we can all take a moment to silently thank those young people from our country who have died in oath of service to our nation.

And of course celebrate your right to play that music as loud as your city noise oridinance will allow.

First of all, there is no intent to here to take away from the purpose of Memorial Day. I lost a brother in law in Vietnam. If he had been alive to hear some of the bands posted (some of them came out after his death), he would have loved all of them, particularly the Ramones. It was the type of person he was. And he also had a favorite saying: all work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy.

I respect your somber views on the purpose of this weekend. I for one have lost enough people in my life to turn to joyful celebration of the spirit of their lives. And in my life, music is a really good way to do that.
