My Mom, Dad and I went out to eat last night. We all had burgers but my Mom had mayonnaise on hers. A few hours later she got hit with diarrhea. No nausea or vomiting though. She's had the runs since 8 PM last night. Sounds like a mild case of food poisoning to me. Do you think she can take some anti diarrhea meds?

Could be a mild case of food poisoning, or maybe a food intolerance? I have IBS and if I ate even a bit of mayo I'd be in a lot of trouble. Immodium or Pepto may give her some relief... and remind her to stay hydrated!

I concur she is losing fluids so she should take in some fluids. An anti diarrhea OTC med should be ok. A folk remedy that wrks for me is to pour of glass of real Coca-Cola and stire to de-fizz it. This as a tip given to me by some nurses a long time ago and it seems to work. Oh and it shouldn't be too cold.

I don't recommend taking anything to stop the diarrhea. Her body is expelling the bacteria.

Just make sure she stays well hydrated. She should be drinking liquids above what she would usually drink to compensate. Water, tea, coffee, jello, ice cream, juice, soups. milk (dairy or soy)....all count towards fluids Even fruits and veggies to a certain degree.

The caramel in the cola is a laxative
I don't know why that concoction was recommended to you.

Well my Dad just said his burger had mayonnaise on it too. He's not sick so it must not be food poisoning. Maybe my Mom just has a bug. I hope I don't get it.
