Hey everyone! I'm new to the whole cat thing, in fact my brother and I still haven't found a new kitty to take care of. I'm actually more of a dog person, so when we visited the shelter today my brother had a hard time dragging me away from the dog runs. I did manage to leave canine-free, but unfortunately we didn't have a cat with us either. So we're still looking, and looking forward to sharing our new additions with everyone here.

I love dogs too, but my favorite is still cats. I have found that cats can do almost anything a dog can do. I am glad to hear you went to a shelter, so many animals, so few homes. Cats and dogs can get along and be life long buddies, mine sleep together. You might think about a male versus a female cat. Males tend to be more social and playful. They usually cuddle more and are more willing to learn tricks. All my cats, male and female, play fetch. The males tend to play fetch their whole lives, my females will usually only play when they feel like it. lol I had a male that loved my hubby (dog person) so much he followed him everywhere, inside and outside. He was always bringing things to play fetch with and would hang out on the couch with him and watch tv. Females can be more standoffish. Just my observations, but most people will agree. Don't be afraid to ask for a room where you can play with the cat and get to know it, most shelters have "get to know each other" type rooms. Also, remember that cats can be more stressed than dogs in a shelter type setting and behave more aggressivly than dogs at first, but will usually calm down after a couple of days when you bring them home. Happy looking.

Thank you all so much. Everyone here seems so friendly. Well, we finally got our kitties! We went to shelters in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, and each time we went there were no kittens available, which I suppose is a good thing considering they all got good homes! We ended up adopting two kittens from a woman who had found a litter in her backyard. They were in this tiny little space between the houses, maybe 8 inches across. We haven't named them yet, we're waiting until we get a definite answer on their sexes. I posted some pictures on the pregnant cats and kitten care board.
