In heat and need help

One of my newest additions to the family is a little semi feral girl named scarlet. She was completely wild when we got her and we have only ever gotten her to trust me and my DH. (She will even still have "episodes" where she will claw at us) This is one of the reasons we haven't been able to adopt her out.

In any case, when she was spayed it was discovered she had developed ALL kinds of wrong. Only half of her reproductive system was where it is suppose to be. The other half is spread through out her intestines. She also only has one kidney. Her whole left side of her urogentital tract is messed up. Short of resectioning her entire intestine tract, we can't remove the rest of the uterine tissue. So even though she can not physically reproduce, she will continue to go into heat. She has been in heat on and off for the past month. She is driving me and the rest of my cats CRAZY! (Even though the males in my house are neutered, they all know whats going on and are getting those "urges")

This leads me to my questions... how long can this last for? and is there anything I can do to stop it?

PLEASE help... I don't know much longer me and my cats can take this!!!

I hate to tell you this it can last for Months. It really depends on the Cat . Some are every other Week. Some go 5 Months non stop. I have one taht could not be fixed but she has maybe 2 heats a year and they only last a week. She is old though. is she screaming very loud.

The poor kitty. This could go on for months or years. If all the uterine tissues are not removed, the cat will continue to cycle. Its so sad she is messed up inside. Its hard on you, family, other cats, etc. You may have to make a tough decision regarding her quality of life as it is right now.

My prayers are with you that you can make the right decision for her.

Those were my thoughts too. Will she be able to have a normal life?

Yeah, this will go on. Obviously, all cats do vary (as many personal testimonies you will read here will show), but a heat cycle of a cat is related to amount of sunshine. Generally, cats are capable of being on heat for about 9 months of the year - so your girl could be one of those cats who only goes on heat for a limited period of time during those 9 months, or she could go immediately from heat cycle to heat cycle.

Maybe a chat with the vet is in order to establish how best to deal with this situation? Being on heat causes a lot of stress in cats, and since she will never be able to relieve that stress (either via spaying or pregnancy) if she is on a continuous heat cycle...well, that could cause problems not only for you but for her.

All the best!

seems like i read somewhere about a BC pill for cats... maybe something like that could help?

i couldn't find anything on the net about it, but i did run across something similar for dogs, so there might be something for cats, as well!
