I got Emma about a month ago, she is a 5 month old Maltese puppy, Jack is 7 months old. Since they are the only animals in my house that are around the same size, they have developed a bond I cant break. they are the best of friends and they play constantly, every waking moment. The problem is when I got Emma about a month ago, they did the same thing, from day one. Jack the cat scratched Emma on the face, not in a mean way, they were playing, but at the same time it cut her and made her blled a little. The cut was by her eye. So since then I have stopped them from playing because I have been worried Jack might scratch her eye.

Everyday its a constant battle, I sit here with a squirt bottle attached to my hand, and Im constantly squirtting them to break them up from playing. I feel bad because all they want to do is play, but Im so worried Emma is going to get hurt, and eye injuiries are the worst.

Its driving me nuts, I cant relax in my own house cause Im constantly siting up with the bottle as they play. And they never stop. Emma knows the command no, and it works but only for a minute, then they are back to playing.

Maybe i shouldnt be so worried? I dont know. Im not sure what to do. At this point I can either let them play and take their chances, or keep doing what im doing.

Id seperate them but the only way would be to put Jack in his room, and thats fine for a couple hours but I cant keep him in there all the time.

What should I do?
I wish i could just let them play and not worry, but we all know how sharp cats claws are and how much damage they can do.

Aw! At least they aren't terrorizing each other!!
First, you could try clipping your kitty's nails, removing the sharp little hook on the end or you could try some of those plastic nail caps that you glue on the cats' nail.

I agree. I've had cats and dogs for many years now and I love it when they play like that. The dog will learn to avoid the claws and the cat will learn to avoid the dogs teeth. And honestly, the only injuries that I've had with my cats over the years are when the cats play with each other, not with the dogs. IMO, try not to worry so much.

I was going to say....I wish mine would play like that! I can see them making a start at it every so often but it's like they can't figure out how to play. I agree with Momofmany, they'll figure out how to play without hurting each other. You're lucky they're such good buddies!

Over the river and through the woods...
I agree, let them play, but trim Jack's claws. At 7 months old they aren't "kitten" claws any longer and you should be able to snip the tips off. Easier said than done, I know. Just make sure you don't cut the wick (you can usually see it as the blood vessel feeding the nail). I usually try to catch mine when they are sleeping. MUCH easier that way!

Other than that, let them play! Like was said before, they both have their own advantages (claws vs teeth) and they will let the other know when they have had enough. You are so lucky to have them get along this well! Just sit back and enjoy!

That sounds so cute
All I can say is when my cat was a kitten not so long ago, she batted everything that moved, including my eyeball one morning! She got the tip in the corner of my eye and it hurt soo bad, but nothing permanant. That was the only time, and we both got scared and learned a good leason. Your puppy will figure it out real quick that kitties have sharp nails and not to bother it. just keep the nails cut short (a good idea anyway) and it'll be ok
