Wasp stings?

Dang these wasps, and cats that don't know better than to chase them! Guy has a sting on his paw and I feel terrible...even though he doesn't seem to.

He keeps licking the paw (which is swelling up like a cartoon) but he's walking on it...and still chasing birds that fly by the window. I called the vet, and they say to keep an eye on him and bring him by if he starts showing signs of a stronger reaction...But so far it's just localized swelling. Is there anything I can do to help with that? How long do I stand watch, before I count him "in the clear?"
