When are the people (not just dems but rep also) going to get a clue. you have fire fights right accross your border, with people shooting automatic weapons at us on this side of the border.

"- Three Democratic lawmakers who spoke Wednesday about alleged anti-immigrant coverage by conservative media outlets were not aware of a recent State Department travel alert warning Americans about military-like "combat" along the southern U.S. border in Mexico, where Americans are being kidnapped and murdered."

Well, isn't this wonderful, check out this little comment by the illustrious
Representative Hilda Solis (D-CA) Quoted below:

""I've read different reports of the violence in Mexico, and I am a strong advocate for cracking down on the violence, and I'm very concerned about the murder of women," Solis said. "But I'm more concerned about people having their civil rights violated here.""

Real nice eh? She is more concerned with people's civil rights than the murder of women. Nothing more needs to said about people like her. Vote her out California, you don't need people like her in office.

Hilda Solis is my representative and I'm definitely voting for her. I know she's smart and has her heart in the right place.

Well, if they're shooting at us, I think we'd better shoot back.

Trouble is, the National Guard is over in Iraq.

That sort of knowledge is so very common, it is not surprising that the congresspeople are not aware of that ONE specific alert. One would have to be stupid not to realize that. Sorta like being told to wear stable boots, not sandals, when you're out vaccinating cattle IMO, just another attempt by the media to create a ruckus....

Can't we up the ante with firefights along the border? Triple strand concertina, tangle foot, interlocking fields of fire- then let the fun begin.

I would agree with you but this is Congress we are talking about. If ignorance is truly bliss, those people have the market cornered with theirs. They aren't exactly the best and brightest.

Not quite true. They are also at the border. I see them there every time I go to Laredo or McAllen.

I see the point of your post, but keep in mind that those who have tried to use that argument (such as the governor of Louisiana) have had to look at the facts and withdraw their comments.

However, those at the border are not allowed to shoot back, and I believe the end of the authorization for the border program is at hand.

A far bigger problem than a couple of politicians not being aware of a travel alert is the corruption in the Border Patrol, with officers allowing in illegal immigrants, drugs, and weapons. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/27/us...agewanted=1&hp
Quote:
Altogether, there are about 200 open cases pending against law enforcement employees who work the border. In the latest arrests, four employees in Arizona, Texas and California were charged this month with helping to smuggle illegal immigrants into the country.

While the corruption investigations involve a small fraction of the overall security workforce on the border, the numbers are growing. In the 2007 fiscal year, the Homeland Security Department's main anticorruption arm, the inspector general's office, had 79 investigations under way in the four states bordering Mexico, compared with 31 in 2003. Officials at other federal law enforcement agencies investigating border corruption also said their caseloads had risen.
