Ok, I have a new kitten... she's about 2 months old, is a long haired 4 color (( orange, brown, white, and black... and darn cute too)). She's been having a lot of problems with breathing ((she seems to have a cold)) and one of her eyes is blind. She also has a cateract in the other eye, and to top it all off she seems to be partialy deaf. I took her to the Animal Shelter ((I can't quite afford to take her to a vet yet... sorry...)) yesterday, and asked what could be wrong with her. I pointed out the fact that her blind eye ((the right one)) was giving off a redish/blackish discharge that crusted at the inner corner of her eye. He told me that was common with kittens with a blind eye, and also told me that it would go away. He said that she had a slight cold and it would also go away. I was wondering if there was anyting I could do to help speed my little one's recovery.

Thanks.

you can try giving her GSE (grapefruit seed extract) it's fights bacteria and fungus and viruses! Also giver her wet food (preferably only) so it is easier on her throat and digestive system. You can put the GSE in her wet food, 2 drops 2 times a day. I have done this for my three cats when one came home with a cold and gave it to the others. The one with breathing problems though needed anti-inflammatory and other shot to get better from the vet...

Ovbiously I think you should try to get her to a vet, they may give her antibiotics and check her eyes better (was she blind in one eye from birth? It could be because of the virus she has, and a cataract?? )..the cat flu can be dangerous for young kittens, so I personally wouldn't take chances, also to save the not blind eye!

Also try to make sure she drinks a lot of water and eats enough! She should also sleep a lot, this is good, and when she begins to stay up more on her own you know she is doing better!

I have recently had to deal with three sick cats (two of which are kittens), so if you have any questions, I would love to help with the cold part! Good luck! I hope you kitty get's better!

Thanks for the advice!! I'll try my best to bring her to the doctor. Just to let you know Hobo ((the kitten)) was perfectly fine when she was born... ((at least this was the story that I got from the lady that I picked her up from)), the lady went away for a weekend, and when she came back the kitten was blind in the one eye, and had the cold. I looked a bit at the blind eye, and it looks like something scratched it. It also seems a heck of a lot bigger than the other eye ((the blind one)). She seems to be able to see out of the other one... but she can't judge distances well... Although she has seemed to figure out just how far she needs to go to jump on my knee while I'm typing on the computer... like right now...
Anyways... I'll deffinatly try the grape seed, and I'll have to go out tomorrow and buy some wet food. But my next question would be how do I keep my other cat ((the one who is about 1 month preggy)) from eating it on her?

the cat cold/flu is very contagious you should really keep the sick kitty away from all other cats, especially pregnant one!!!!!!!. Isolate your kitty is it's own room, with food/litter box etc...

wash your hands and change your clothes between cats...

is your other cat vacinated? Even so it's not a gaurentee she won't get sick.

I am very serious, even with all the above cautions my other two cats got the flu. Mild ones compare to the sick kitty but you never know...

If her eye is indeed stratched you should take her to the vet as soon as possible, it's could be infected, and need cream applies directly in the eye, which could save it from going totally blind! If you don't see improvement beware, I have heard of kittens having eye's removed because they wouldn't heal...not to scare you but the eyes are precious and serious. Cats can hide how sick there are very well.

please keep me posted! I am hoping your kitty will get better! and she sounds so cute!

I noticed you said you would try the grape seed thing in your post, be sure and get GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT and NOT Grape Seed Extract, 2 entirely different things!!!! I think they are for 2 different things and you wouldnt want to give your kitty the wrong thing. I have been looking for some of the grapefruit seed extract too and finally found some at a health food store, but I havent used it yet, my kitten is getting better, so I will save it and see if I need it another time.
