I was supposed to work on Friday, but my mom called me to say there was a family emergency and that I needed to get home to help my grandparents out. I called into work and said I couldn't make it. I text messaged my boss Friday night (my boss loves to text message) and told her I couldn't come in on Saturday. I got up Saturday morning to take my Granny to the doctor and I got a text message saying "don't bother coming in monday. bring your key and your shirt back." I should add that I have never called in. I went to work and asked for the day off once in 6 months and that's when I had sinus infection, ear infection, and bronchitis.

I was upset, because I called in, but that's not the worst part.

Then I get a call today and she leaves a message that says "you need to bring in your key and shirt or explain to me why you shouldn't be fired." I go in to work and give her the key back and tell her how my weekend went. By the way I got a call from my other grandma and my grandpa broke his neck on sunday and is still in ICU today. My boss then tells me she's sorry she's loosing me and I say "well, you let me go" and I walked out the door.

The worst part:

A coworker of mine calls to ask me what was wrong. I told her the story and she said "I knew you wouldn't just quit without saying anything." Me: "WHAT?!" My boss told my coworker that I was a no call no show since Friday "I haven't heard from Stephanie since Friday and I figured she wouldn't come in today (monday)."

She's telling people I was a no call no show!!!! I'm annoyed!!! She can't even take responsibility for fireing me?!!!

She is!!!! She's so self centered! She runs her own little coffee shop with two employees that can work more than a few hours a week. I'm one of the two. She tells people she can't afford things and has to raise the prices all the time. She's gone on 4 vacations since I started 6 months ago and she's going on another one next month and another one in July!!!
Don't tell me you can't afford anything when you go on a cruise, and 5 vacations in less than 7 months!!!!

I'm sorry
for you. I know it hurts right now about being fired and her not being more understanding for your situation. I'm sure there is an even better job out there for you!

Thank you. It's actually kind of a releif because she was really using me and depending on me because I was the only dependable person there. I'm just so mad that she's telling people that I am a looser and was a no call no show!!! I would never do that!!!

She sounds like my Ex Mgr. I called him and asked hime if I can o home 1.5 Hours before I was off because my Dad called 911. My Mom was dying and he refused to come. So I stayed till closing and left him a Letter in teh safe saying she is going to die. She died the next day. Then the day of her funeral I had to work after. That was such a bad place to work for. I never even called in Sick in 16 years ecept when I was in Er with a severe Asthma Attack and the day my Grandma died. I know how you feel. I even stayed 2 weeks extra after my Mgrs wife had her baby. It was a 2 hour Drive to get there too. Then they say they would give me a referance letter and never did. Doing the right thing gets you know where. The owners only care about money and nothing else.

I agree signup for unemployment asap. Do you still have the text message and can save on your computer just in case you need proof of calling in??

I'd almost want to look into filing a complaint against her for wrongful termination. Sorry you had to endure such mistreatment. Family emergencies take a bit more precedence than a job IMO. Sending major ((hugs)) your way.

I can't agree more. Document, document, document. Or in this case, text message. She can't claim she wasn't notified if you sent it to her and she responded or acknowledged.

She sounds like an awful boss and truth be told, there are too many out there. I hope you find a job that will appreciate your dependability.

Too bad you don't have a human resource department you could file a complaint with.

I kept the text message and her voicemails. I took a picture of her text message and recorded her voicemails just in case. I know she is going to fight it and say that I quit. Especially because she wrote no call no show and told my coworker I was a no call no show. What an evil person.

Welcome to my world this week! (There's a thread in the PL all about my past week) I completly understand what you're going through
I am sooo sorrry hon! You deserve something better
We should both work somewhere where we'll be appreciated and respected! Your ex boss sounds just as nasty and backwards as mine! I'm sorry you had to go through this- but you did the right thing being there for your family.

If you need anything or need to vent, i'd be happy to lend you a shoulder
I'm soo sorry this happened to you. I definitely understand how much it hurts and is upsetting
But you'll get through it and find something better- i have no doubt!

If something bad had happened and you lost one of them- you wouldn't be thinking- gosh i'm glad i went to work that day .....you'd be thinking- man i am glad i went to be with my family when they needed me because that's what truely matters! You made the right choice - i'm just sorry your boss is as aweful as mine were

Wow! It sounds like a bad week for everyone regarding employment. I hope everyone finds a better job. my DH needs them too, with being laid off. It just makes me afraid watching the news about employment and the food prices, etc... it is depressing.

for all! &

I feel you, too. I got my hours cut so much in one sales campaign, that I asked to be moved to another, and then they fired me, saying I was a new hire and could not pass the test. That way they could hold up our unemployment. If we had to listen less to the instructor's sexual preferences and more to her slipshop instruction, some of us would have actually passed the test. Turns out only about 4 out of 15 made it thru the class.

I would definately sue for wrongful termination since you have the proof you called in. for getting a better job!

first sorry you got fired. Back in the day, i was cooking for for a Chain Restaurant. Had not missed a day in 7 months. Called in sick, got fired the same day. week later they called asked me to come back i just laughed at them and hung up the phone. SO yea i do understand how you upset you are.

Next
That's what you can do when you have your own business.
when you are working for someone else, you will always be at there mercy. The goal is to set your self up , so even if you do get fired. it wont impact you at all.

You're better off not working there. When one door closes, another opens...
