The red spot may indicate which ram mated with this sheep. I imagine the dye will wash out when the wool is processed.

I know some rams wear a thing that leaves paint on the ewe when it`s been mated
Also I saw on a programme, farmers use red, green or blue paint to indicate if the ewe is having a single lamb, twins or triplets

Great shots you have there, as far as the marks on the sheep are concerned, they usually are from the marker that is attached to the ram, so the shepard will know which Ewes have been fertalised. Did you walk far to get to that spot? or did you drive?
I love sheep.
