I've never been to Israel. I spent several lousy months in Beirut, and I've seen the same people that Israel has to deal with. Israel will always have my support. I'm too old to serve in anyone's army anymore, but if all I can do is send best wishes and write them a check, that's what I'll do.

Happy Birthday Israel. Governments may fail you, but you will always have friends.

I just finished reading the article. I'm not as up on weaponry as I used to be, but isn't the Grad rocket a good deal more advanced that the things they used to use?
Here's some info on the Grad Rocket. It was designed by the Soviets in the 1960's.

you left it at my house, so i could have a matching pair

by the way my comment had to do with obama. I would not count on him to keep supporting them

Israel and Palestine are just as bad as each other. I wish we could move countries. Maybe with a sea in between them they wouldn't fight any more.

I’ve been to Israel on a few occasions. Loved it, was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I have no opinion on the whole matter of what’s going on. I just have to say I as well am shocked at only 60 years… sheesh that’s it?

The modern State of Isreal is 60 years old.

Cata_Mint, how you can say Israel is just as bad as the terrorists boggles my mind.

Sarah, I knew it was to good to be true.

Palestinians launch rockets into Israeli territory and kill Israeli citizens, Israeli guards stop a Palestinian pregnant woman reaching a hospital and laugh at her as she gives birth in the back of a car on Christmas eve to twins, one of whom dies as a result.
With the amount of time they've spent trying to kill each other, the attempted genocide, the moving of borders etc over the last 60 years, neither side is innocent in any way.

If we all hadn't been such stick-in-the-muds over mass immigration after the war things might be very different now.

I'm not sure I understand the last sentence of your post.

"If we all hadn't been such stick-in-the-muds over mass immigration after the war things might be very different now."

What does that mean?

Well I thought I'd oblige and try to at least find something argumentative to say....

Loads of countries turned away Jewish people fleeing the Holocaust, as they didn't want to be swamped.
Many Jews secretly settled in Palestine, and if Britain etc had allowed more immigration there might not have been such an urgent need for Israel to be created, and it could have been done in a way that didn't cause every country vaguely nearby to feel the need to immediately go to war with Israel.

No, I believe that Israel would have been created no matter what happened.
It was destined to happen, it IS their land. The Lord gave it to them, can't argue with the Lord.

I thought it was the UN?

Nope, not the U.N.
The country that recently celebrated its 60th birthday was granted its right to exist by the U.N. Any similarities in name to a country that existed in approximately the same place thousands of years ago is entirely co-incidental.

Yeah, right. You are hilarious. The United Nations has no authority to grant
anyone "its right to exist". Least of all Israel. Israel was granted the right to exist by a much much higher authority than the United Nations.

But, thank you for making me chuckle.

If that's the case, why are you only celebrating its 60th birthday?

The modern country of Israel has been around for 60 years. The history of ancient Israel is a bit more complicated. I believe the Kingdom of Israel was founded somewhere around 11BC. After the death of King Saul Israel was divided into a Northern and Southern kingom with the name Israel being kept by the North. The Nothern Kingdom came to end in the 700s when its capital, Samaria, was destroyed by the Assyrians. The Southern Kingdom survived until sometime in the 600s. Afterwards the region came under the rule of others such as the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks (actually Alexander the Great who was Macedonian) and Romans.

Yes and that's obviously the Israel Cindy is referring to. Which is why it confuses me that someone who does not acknowledge the UN's `right' to give anything to anybody would then start a thread celebrating the 60th birthday of a country she believes to have been granted to the Jews much, much earlier.
The UN passed the resolution but wasn't it the British that gave the land to the Israelis (British Mandate of Palestine)?
I thought the British had intended to but gave up when they couldn't reach an agreement between the Jews and Arabs and so left it to the UN to sort out.

oh dear,Quote "The participation of Western leaders with the Jews in this celebration confirms that the West supports this ugly Jewish occupation of our lands and that they stand in the Israelis' trench against us," he said on Friday."

Gee, Osama, did it take you this long to realize we stand with Israel?
If you didn't know this until now, why did you have your buddies fly planes into the WTC and kill 3,000? Just something to do on a boring Tuesday morning?
