How can I remember the laps I've done?

I have the memory of a fish, and get easily distracted, so can't keep track of the amount of laps I've done while swimming. My old watch had a lap counter, but my new watch doesn't (grumble, grumble, I can't find the perfect heart rate monitor watch).

Can anyone think of any way I can keep track of my laps at the pool?

That's what I had to do when I was swimming. It was actually really relaxing to do it that way! Kinda like a weird meditation - because if you start thinking about anything, you lose track!

But that's it. I'd be swimming saying 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 hmmmm what should I cook for dinner, I think I have some chicken in the fridge 7 7 7 7 7 7 oh wait, should that have been 6 6 6 6? Or was it actually only 5 5 5 5 5? Oooh he's cute! 8 8 8 8 8 oh damn, I haven't done 8 yet....

Under the cats, mostly.
I wonder if you can get a golf "clicker" you get to the end of a lap and press the button. Golfers use them to keep track of how many swings they've used in a round - a friend of ours had a waterproof one.... would that be something to consider?

Wish I could help, but the only thing I can do is dog paddle across the width of the pool once the short way, so no counter needed

But I can relate. Yesterday I had to go for some tests, one of which was a stress test. I was pretty wiped after it but had 2 hours before my ride came. So I rested and decided to walk around the track instead of getting on a treadmill. I was losing track of the count. What helped me was to go around 3 times. Sit and rest for a minute. Then go around another 3 times, relax again. This way I was actually only keeping track of the number of times I rested instead of a large number of laps.

I do my drills in sets of 100m. That way I only have to remember to count to four (25m pool). I also sometimes just do drills by the time instead of counting the laps since I know basically how long my 100m takes. I'm also only doing freestyle...
