when the cameras follow you all the time.

Apparently, one of our Presidential contenders thinks we have 58 or 60 states. Can you believe he's that senile, already?

Somebody had better explain "territory" to him.

These folks aren't exactly what I would term the best and brightest.

Yup, we're going to hell in a handbasket.

Nope, we're already there.

I rather think the candidates are simply so exhausted that they can't think straight half the time. I can't recall another primary campaign season anywhere near as long as this one has been.

It seems Obama is another one who was never taught geography in school.

I see the downward spiral continuing no matter who is elected.

I told an acquaintance that that drumbeat, while it might be heartfelt, could cause some very serious problems.

But our system seems to toddle on, never quite coming completely unglued.

Preach on, brother.

Well, he can take a page from Hillary's playbook and say that he simply "misspoke".

So much for his remark that McCain has 'lost his bearings".
I don't support him, nor do I at the moment intend to vote for him, but I think the man was probably just exhausted and meant 47. I doubt he would have gotten this far if he really did not know there were not 57 states. He is not the first candidate, and I am sure he will not be the last that made a mistake in his answering a question during a bout of extreme exhaustion.
I never thought I would find myself defending a Democrat, but surely the man can't be that downright stupid.

I also believe he meant 47. Can you imagine the pressure on the candidates touring constantly and knowing every word is going to be scrutinized? I think we should just laugh it off. If this is the worst thing he does, he'll be fine. (oh, and I usually vote Democrat )

I also think he meant 47, but much is made of any such error. The same is true of McCain's imprecise language about Al Qaeda and the Iranian Special Groups. It's easy to get going so fast on your sentence that the first thing you know, you've run out the other end without making any sense.

Well, no, there's a big difference between Sunni and Shia. Much more difference than between Catholic and Baptist, to hear them tell it.

But the press and the public is so unforgiving about any error by anyone.

Come down to it, I think Hillary just mis-remembered her visit to Bosnia; I don't think she was telling a deliberate lie, just suffering from the human tendency to embellish our own memories.

I would link to the old song, "Shearing at the Bar," here, but I can't find it anywhere. But it would be appropriate, I assure you...

Here's the poem, at any rate:

dont care if they call themself sunni or shia or Jemaah Islamiyah, all are the same to me.

well she is old, i am sure she does think she was under sniper fire. Something she said several times, Not just the one time..

oh yea, the girl i picked up in the bar last weekend was a super model also
post #18 of 31
Roger Clemens does a lot of mis-remembering, too!
I really hope he meant to say 47, otherwise..

I thought it started with Reagan, but oh well.

I say give McCain a pass on this. And everyone who knows my posts, knows I'm a Democrat.

err, it was obama not mccain

I come from a political family where politics were discussed at the dinner table. I grew up watching Crossfire and other political shows.
There are flaws in every candidate and depending on who you support those flaws seem to be bigger than they are. If you believe in McCain then you will forgive his gaffes. If you like Hillary you will forgive hers and Obama his.
Anyone can make a somewhat convincing argument about any candidate. There really is nothing anyone can say to me to make me vote for McCain. Even though I benefit from some of his proposals I have never liked him. There are other Republicans I would have found much more interesting but they were smart enough to know that GW has made it harder for Republicans and they wanted nothing to do with coming after him.
I would like a voice of reason and moderation. Common sense would be a plus.
I won't sit home, I will vote, but not for him.

I thought we have 50 states. Did we lose a few? Holy cow, where was I?
And people say Bush is dumb.

Whew, I thought I was tripping here with people saying "he meant 47" I actually and checked.
Uuuhhhh, people, we DO have 50 states.
And the gaffe that's being done to death here is, if I recall well, that he said he had been to 57 states. He wasn't saying how many there are, but how many he had visited. Have you visited all of the states?
I don't think you have to have visited every state to know how many states there are in this United States of America.

It's nice to know that Barak is very knowledgeable in American history.

I think my 6-year old grandson knows how many States in the Union there are. Perhaps I should have my grandson give Barak some lessons.
That's not the point. The point is that it was a slip on his part, that just because there ARE 50 states (of which I'm sure he is aware) he hasn't necessarily visited them all, and it was how many he had visited that he was talking about.

The whole thing is blown totally out of proportion anyway -- as is the case with slips of the tongue from any public figure. It's tiresome.
But when Bush misspeaks it is all over the internet and much is made about his lack of intelligence, yadda, yadda, yadda. But when it is a Democrat, it is "tiresome"
For the record, it's tiresome, no matter which public figure is being ragged mercilessly about some stupid slip. They're human beings, for crying out loud.

He SAID that he had visited 57 states, had one to go, and his staff was not allowing him to visit Hawaii or Alaska. He almost certainly meant 47, which the other three, DO make 50.
Good grief, Obama thinks we have 60 states.
