One of our cats, Addie, can't be spayed because she has an allergy to anaesthetics (she very nearly died when exposed to very minimal levels). That's not a huge problem as far as procreation because our males are neutered and she has no access to the outdoors (we live in an apartment building and there are about six doors she'd have to get through to make it ouside).

However, she is driving us crazy! She's been vocalizing constantly when awake for the past few days. She's usually loud when in heat, but this time is horrible. I'm at the end of my rope. Is there anything we can do? Obviously, allowing her to mate is not an option.

Seriously, I'm losing my mind. Please help.

You could ask your vet about putting her on the pill, I've not heard of it being used long term though.

Here in Europe we have both birth control pills and birt controll shots for cats. They contain medroxyprogesterone. Works really well but unfortunately has some side effects such as pyometra (which your cat of course can get anyway since she can't be spayed), mammary tumours and diabetes mellitus. We also have access to an implant called Suprelorin which is a lot safer and that chemically spays the cat for 6 months.

I know some Australian breeders use Ovaban as birt control on cats and apparently some American vets give it to newly neutered studs in order to reduce the spraying quickly.

All methods (except from Suprelorin) have some serious side effects though. Maybe your vet is able to import Suprelorin?

We do have the implant over here too, I've heard differing things though.

Some say it's only meant for use in dogs, others say it's fine in cats. I've also heard some concerns about them not coming back into season after the implant, not an issue in this case of course as she's not for breeding.

Here it's approve for use in male dogs but it's used in cats too. I wouldn't put a future queen on Suprelorin due to the risk of not coming back into season but in this particular case maybe Suprelorin would be the best solution. Not a breeding cat, a cat that just can't be spayed. Suprelorin is probably the safest solution hen choosing between medroxyprogesterone drugs and Suprelorin.
