I went to visit my mom and she told me her cat wasn't doing so well. I didn't think much of it till I saw the poor thing! She looks just awfull! She's had all of her shots, is wormed, and everything. Mom took her to the vet a couple weeks ago and the vet thought the cat just had really bad mites. He gave my mom some meds and they aren't helping. The poor thing was on ear mite meds for a week and then my mom took the cat back to the vet. The vet took some samples and what not and says he has no idea what's going on! I don't know how he could have no idea!!! Now the cat has been on meds for another week and still doesn't look any better!

She has all of her claws and does scratch sometimes. I never saw her scratch when I was there fro a couple days, but that doesn't mean much. She has those scabs and strange skin all the way down to her cheeks.

It almost looks like a REALLY bad case of feline acne!

If you scroll down in the following link, there's a picture of a Persian with something called "idiopathic Persian facial dermatitis." It almost looks like that!

When Spooky had horrible feline acne, it turned out to be a food allergy. When I changed her food, it cleared up beautifully!

Your mom needs to take her kitty to a different vet for a second opinion! Poor baby!

Oh wow, I wouldn't know what that is either, I've never seen it before.

Poor baby.

Thanks everyone!!! I told my mom she needs to take the kitty else where, she agrees!

I forgot to mention I DO NOT like this vet and his view point at all!
I asked my mom if she had her cats tested for FIV and she said "Yeah, I got them checked for everything and the Vet said that if the kittens were FIV+ we would have to put them to sleep." I about flipped when she told me that! I explained to her what I've learned about FIV here on TCS, and that we could have an FIV+ cat in our house as long as they didn't get in flights and bleed. That vet is a jerk!

To me it looks like chemical burns. Does this kitty get to go outside? could she have gotten some kind of chemical on her face? fertilizer? Feed supplement?

She looks like a dog here that got chemical burns from rolling in the grass around his owners home when they were having the exterior bricked. Muratic acid is used to clean brickwork and some must have gotten on the ground and the dog rolled in it.

The fact that it is just on her face is peculiar. I don't know what kind of mite medicine she is on but Revolution works the best for most types. Unless this extends to the back of her neck.

I agree with you that seeing a different vet is a must. He seems to be taking a "whatever it is just a cat" approach. I hate that. Some vet just really don't care about cats.

Lots of that kitty gets better quickly.

when Pixel has a herpes flare-up, she gets little sores on her face. got pretty bad the first time - 1st vet said 'allergy' & gave me neosporin. after a couple of days, w/no improvement, i took her to the vet who worked last on Mouse. he said he thought it was herpes, & gave me viralys. after 3 days, they were drying up & the scabs were flaking off.
now, hers never got as bad looking as this, but a lysine supplement is easy to administer & relatively cheap - & won't hurt her even if it's something else.
just something to try until you can get her to a new vet. i agree - this one doesn't sound like a good one for your mom or her cat.

IMO it looks like a bad allergic reaction. Poor thing, that she gets better fast. Or what about eczema? Can cats even get that?

I'm really glad your mom will be getting a second opinion, hopefully soon. It hurts just to look at those pictures of her poor kitty.

I don't think your mom should try to clean her kitty's face. It appears too raw and sensitive to mess with right now. The best thing is to get that baby to a vet who knows what he or she's doing.

New vet is a must. How any vet could send a cat home with so little info and testing is baffling. I have never seen anything like it before. Poor baby.
Good for you for noticing it and taking action.

Agree with WhiteCatLover, allergy, ringworm, or mange. Hopefully its something that can be cleared up in a short time.

Poor baby

Just a couple of questions:

1. Does this cat go outside?

2. Has your mother tried to clean the cat's face with anything?

The cat doesn't go outside.

Her face is clearing up finally!!! My mom spoke with the women who have been working at the vet office for more than 10 years and they gave her another medicine to use. I'm not sure what it is, but it's some sort of ointment. Thank god she's getting better!
