I could never figure this one out, but here is plausible explanation:

Has your cat ever dropped his favorite catnip mouse or rubber fetching ball in his water bowl? Or, have you gone to re-fill his food bowl, only to find a special toy of his right in the middle? It just might be that your cat is trying to find a "safe" place for his favorite things. It often happens that the toy that ends up in the water or food bowl is often a toy that has recently been enjoyed by your cat, or even by your cat with you. In the wild, cats often take their prey back to their "nest" area, and hide it from predators.
Indoor cats don't really have a "nest" per se, so they often consider their food and water dishes as the "safest" areas within their "territory".

That's so funny!! I have been wondering for the past year why my little girl did that. Her big brother never does that so I didn't know why she did. It's so funny too. She will put any toy she's playing with in her water bowl or her food bowl or sometimes she puts it in his bowl!!!

Ha ha. Now I know.

Fred not only dunks his toys in the water bowl, he retrieves them and brings them to me so we can play fetch with the sopping wet toys. Especially nice when he brings them to me in bed (sarcasm)!

My Leo put his favorite toys in my boots and my husbands slippers,
just the other day, I almost hurt myself as I was in a rush, and didn't know his little shaker mouse was in my boot!

My cat loves twist ties and hairbands. I find them in his water bowl and in the toilet. Pretty funny!

And here I thought Trouble was just trying to drown the mouse. That makes so much more sense.

OT: Cookie - I love that pic of Leo in your sig file! That is just precious

Thanks Jamie! He is so precious to me! That pic was when he was only 2.5 months old!

I have a cat who likes to steal my girls' socks and play with them. Then I find them in the food dish, usually chewed on with some soggy cat food added. Yum! He's so funny, they have lost many socks this way!

Trent puts his sparkle balls in the food bowl. Especially when they are running low, I'll find 3 or more balls in there. I thought he was just trying to fill his bowl back up! LOL (Not really, he will put his balls in there even when it's full.
It's just funny because he will put MORE balls in the bowl when the food is getting low.)

Ophelia puts her most precious toys, twist ties and hair ties, in the water bowl.

Yeah, but do they take them out of the water bowl and play; hence making everything wet.

My cats love those spongy balls and lately I will either find it in the water bowl or on the carpet soaking wet. So, not only do they dunk their balls but they fish them out to play too! Luckily the water squeezes out of them easily. Silly cats
