When I was a little girl, my mom's friend took care of me while my mom was at work.
I bonded very strongly with her, but we lost touch after we moved hundreds of miles away.
The last time I saw her, I was 7 years old.
I have thought of her from time to time, and have wondered what became of her.
She always had health problems, and a part of me was afraid to look for her and find out the worst.
But lately the urge to find her had just been eating away at me.
(I would like to see her, duh!)
I started my search in the phone book...
I wrote down the names and numbers of the ones who could be her.
Today, I called one of the numbers... and guess what?
I found her!
I was so nervous. I thought:
1. I'm going to scare a bunch of strangers by calling them and asking them if they're my mom's friend.
2. She might not remember me.
3. Maybe she's not interested in talking to me.
...You know, even after 17 years, I recognized her voice when she picked up the phone. And much to my relief, she did remember me, and she did want to talk to me.
She hasn't talked to my mom yet, because I called her from my cell phone and my mom doesn't have long distance... but both she and my mom are interested in reuniting.
I'm excited, relieved, and even a bit sad.
(She's aged, and I've grown up... if only people could stay the way they were in our best memories!)
I'll be able to visit in a couple of weeks, but if you can believe it...
After seventeen years, a couple of weeks seems like an impossibly long time.
Please send me your vibes, prayers and wishes that we are able to reunite.
I know that some of you out there are also looking for long-lost relatives and friends, so I wanted to share my story here.
(Good luck on your search.)
