I have been told it is because many plastic bags are made of fish oils. and of course the cats can smell this even after processing. It is dangerous to leave a cat with a plastic bag in case it tries to eat it, and even playing with it can lead to accidents.

My Max,
, may he RIP, loved licking plastic....plastic grocery bags, plastic flower wrap, plastic garland.....I asked the Vet about this, and he said it was harmless. I researched it a bit and nothing is conclusive...some say it's the texture of plastic on the tongue, some say that the plastic is made from petroleum and the cats like the flavour....who knows. As long as it's harmless and non-toxic.....Max is the only one of my 4 cats who ever licked plastic and he did it right from a kitten.

Hope that helps.

Someone told me it had beef tallow in it or something. (?) My cat does the same thing, especially when she wants to let me know she's hungry. I let her play with bags under strict supervision only.

My big boy likes to lick plastic bags, all the time infact. He does it most often when the cat fountin is running low, or when he wants to play with me.

Jasmine has tried to on occassion but i've stopped her. We try to make sure we never leave any out in their reach.

As a vet tech i've seen more than one furbaby have to be cut open to remove plastic bags and other random items that they've decide to eat. It's a rough surgery on them and sometimes when cats and dogs get into stuff like that it can cause so many complications/blockages that it can actually kill them. I'm super careful to try not to let mine get ahold of anything like that.

My Quincy is an absolute fiend about licking plastic bags--or chewing them. I believe he most often does this when he's hungry. I do the best I can to keep them out of his reach, but he still sometimes manages to get ahold of them.
