When I was in high school, my best friend called and left a message on the answering machine that she was spending the night at her boyfriend's house, but telling her parents that she would be at my house.

We (including my parents) were sitting right next to the machine eating dinner.

This did not end well, although I convinced them not to tell her parents.

OMG. I can just imagine. Your poor parents. Her poor parents!

But, not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I love it! I'm so spamming everyone I know with that one.

I've covered for my friends before. But we arrange things via phone, email or text- no answering messages!
If the parents called, the friend was always 'in the bathroom' and we then called our friends so they knew to call their parents. Or the friend would genuinely come over to my house, wait for their parents to call, and then sneak out.
We were never caught, although we had some close shaves.
