What it means to be poor

One day a well-to-do father took his son to the country with the purpose of showing him how poor people can be. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

"It was great, Dad."
"Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked.
"Oh Yeah" said the son.
"So what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.

The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them."

With this the boy's father was speechless. Then his son dded, "Thanks dad for showing me how poor we are."

Too often we forget what we have and concentrate on what we don't have. A person's worth is based on one's perspective.

May you be blessed by...
* A sunbeam to warm you,
* A moonbeam to charm you,
* Laughter to cheer you,
* Devoted friends near you.

i love that story. it reminds me of something i heard at work the other day.

our missions assistant was telling us about the perspective of our contacts in other countries. we pray for them because they have next to nothing. we pray for them because to be a christian risks their safety.

they said they pray for us because it is easy for us to get more caught up in material things than our beliefs because we live in an abundant part of the world. they also pray for us because it is easy for us to get casual about our beliefs because we are not persecuted for them the way they are. we can say we believe "x" and not really follow it because we are not put to the test as often. for example, it is not worth it for them to say they are a christian and not follow the bible to the letter of the law because they can get killed for their declaration of faith.

i just thought you might find it interesting...

Jan, that is interesting.
Bren, thanks for posting that. I think people get so caught up in materialism that they forget whats important, they forget to stop and smell the roses.
