He became a little more active last night, but this morning he is lethargic again. Still not eating and only lying on one side.... he tries to turn with great difficulty.

Thanks for everyone's input. I took him back to another vet this afternoon... he had a high fever and a bad infection in his left back leg. A lot of pain. They gave him antibiotics and pain meds and put him on a drip for the night. Might not have been a stroke after all...

That is good news! Well, not that he has a bad infection, but that it is something treatable. Antibiotics usually work pretty fast, so he should be feeling much better in a few short days. You have done an excellent job observing him and persisting with the vet when you knew something wasn't right. I am a little surprised the vet didn't find such a nasty infection at the first visit. But, cats are masters at hiding pain and masking illness, so it does happen. Pease continue to update us and let us know how he is doing.

They even took his temperature and it was normal... unless they did it the wrong way? Anyway it was a different vet today at my local animal hospital. Thank God I took him in again. I miss him so much right now and hope he feels much better tomorrow.

I am so glad YOU knew something was still wrong with him and took him to be seen again.  Let's hope it was this infection all along rather than a stroke, and that he'll be 100% back to normal once the antibiotics kick in.

I'm glad to hear it is an infection instead of a stroke, as a stroke doesn't have a real treatment, other than possible surgery. I like old school vets that have been around for decades...they really know thier stuff. My old black cat Pete, RIP at 23, developed a similar problem and we thought it might have been a stroke. The vet argued with me that the symptoms didn't match those for a stroke...mostly the pain and reluctance to be handled., The vet found a tiny spot smaller than a match head that was causing him great pain in his leg, despite me saying that there was no way the problem could be an injury! I'm nearly 60 and the vet is easily 70, but he is the greatest vet I have seen with compassion that you won't find in any of the new school Vet clinics.

You know your kitty better than anyone and you stuck to your guns regarding your cat's diagnosis...by doing so you have probably saved your cat some serious suffering and maybe saved his life!
Keep up the good job...your cat isn't done with you yet!!

Thanks Jim. In this case the second vet was a very young girl, but she quickly saw his problem and treated him with as much tenderness as possible. But she struggled a little with the drip because he was so dehydrated and his veins very flat. Hopefully he is in better shape tomorrow.

I really need some input about my furbabie I wrote about a couple weeks ago. She has been being treated sympathetic ally for the lack of movement in her hind legs and non use of left paw. Vet started her onisor no response, then depo-metrol with laser treatments but she still can't walk although she is moving more. Vet suggested Neuro vet $ 275

For 1/2hr. He didn't offer much. He wants to do MRI $3000, and still might not show problem. We just spent $4000 in april and then $500+ 4 weeks ago from the death of two other fur babies. We are tapped out. I am heartbroken and an emotional wreck. When I read this blog it sounds like fuzzy might have had a stroke. My vet has her on an antibiotic and of course the coquin, she did a feline leuk-neg wants to continue laser and antibiotic, but stop steroids. Please can someone advice--i am wore out emotionally and physically. Have my own health issues as well!!!

I have actually  never heard of a stroke causing prolonged paralysis in a cat (not like it does in people). Does she have the other symptoms (uneven pupils, etc.)   I would definitely think your Vet would have already checked this out if he thought it were a possibility.  I read in another thread where you posted you had used Advantage from Walmart.  You mentioned this to the Vet Tech and they said this could cause seizures.  Did you actually discuss this with the VET?

How OLD is she?   Didn't you say at first they thought it was arthritis?  I've also never heard of arthritis causing paralysis. DID they do full blookwork on her?  I'm asking because sometimes diabetes or low potassium can actually cause weakness in the legs.  Diabetic neuropathy can happen in all four legs. If a bloodtest has been done, then I probably would go with the Neuro Vet, even though it's costly.  What other choice do you have?  Have you appled for Care Credit?  www.carecredit.com

BTW, so sorry for the loss of your other two
This has got to be so difficult for you, especially following that event

Yay!  So glad for you and Mr. Mot
.  I'm sure you are much relieved

Thanks for all the support. All I can say to other members is that a cat in severe pain and fever can show symptoms similar to a stroke. Please make sure that infection and pain is cancelled out before assuming it's a stroke. If both eyes are equally dilated... it's a sign of stress and pain. Cats are masters at hiding wounds and injuries. Good luck to everyone with a sick or injured fur-baby. Hope for a quick recovery xxx

In answer to some of your questions. The advantage was given to the other cats since they went outdoors ( fenced yard) but I am not sure we gave it to fuzz because she never went outside. It's been a some time ago like last year. I did look at her pupils and there is a slight difference. But, I don't think the vet cked them since July when she suddenly went blind. She put her on steroids an a antibiotic, it cleared up in a couple days. Yes, we do know about care credit. It has to be pd in 6 months or interest is accured. My husband told me tonight he wants to wait to see if the antibiotic works.
I am at my wits end because I am the one caring for her all day, and because I love her so dearly.
I appreciate your response and condolences, I just keep praying she will be okay.

You also mentioned arthritis, yes that is what they thought at first until her paw atrophied.
Remember, I think I mentioned the Neuro vet is not even sure anything would show, on the MRI especially since she has been on the depo-metrol(sp)?

My cat is a 26 year old tabby cat which I took over for my mom God Bless her when she went into a nursing home .I had the cat checked at the vets because she was losing weight. Found she was Diabetic. She was put on Diabetic special food which you can only buy from a vet place.. Name I use is PURINA Proplan Veterinary Diets 5.5oz can DM DieteticManagement. There is the Dry & the Wet.The dry is bagged. 6 or 10 lb. Had a exam & found her blood sugar was way off. Started her on the Diabetic food wet & dry & Insulin. She is now doing fine for her old age but starting to drink an over excess of what she was drinking. It has been 6 years now treating her with those things & up until 4 months ago was fine.Until One day she acted out of sorts  .All of a sudden she trembled - walked side ways - & kind of fell while she laid   It was like she stared of into space -  body was jumping like spasms - then her head tipped to one side & froze there. I tried to comfort her by  lightly  patting her - talk to her softly- love her & tell her I was there & it was O K.. Her body would stop jerking then quickly start again.  My self  not seeing this before thought I was going to loose her  .I called a neighbor who told me she would take me to a vet. The cats  Name Buffy) was like that for about 20 minutes.      Than she got up still not having correct balance  walked sideways for a short hallway length & got to the bedroom & jumped up on the bed.  I was in shock my self to see this.It was like she was determined to get up & go where she wanted to be. Of course it made me happy . So I called a vet & we took her there . She was checked  & given a shot .of something to correct what had happened. The Vet called it a seizure . But when her head was cocked to one side I thought sure it was a stroke .Praise the Lord she is fine & has been since that.time.We love her dearly. I don't know if this explanation of what happened to her will be of help to you people who have cats who are diabetic.but remember no two animals may act the same. She also is getting a bit lame.now.but I guess she really  deserves that   After trying to give her a good loving home  & the life she has led she deserves a award. at 26 years old.  God Bless you Buffy.

Wow!  You must be doing something right to still have Buffy at 26 years!  Congrats.

How wonderful to still have your baby at 26, that deserves a PTL.

My baby is still in terrible shape, and my husband is not doing anything different. He is not talking to me or telling me anything he is going to do or not do. This is a terrible situation to be in, by law I cannot do anything against his desires since both our names are on the account. I would have to get a court order, this would create more animosity in our marriage, I know many would say who cares. But, I have no other place to live and as a Christian I need to put my marriage first. Believe me everything inside me says otherwise.

I wish I would get a response I feel so alone in this. Fuzz is still alive but like a rag doll. She can move her head some, but mostly follows me with her eyes, her hearing is intact. She had another laser 10th I think and my husband chose to do more steroids even though the vet warned him if it is cancer it with give more blood flow to the area. I see her deteriorating in spite of her strength to hang on.

I've been reading your posts but I'm afraid I don't know how to help. If you can't do anything against your husband's wishes, I don't know what to tell you. If you think she isn't getting the care she needs, can you try to persuade him to do something different?

Thank you for answering, no one knows except what has been said by numerous people. Yes, my husband did change the treatment to some degree laser M W F in her cervical spine and another antibiotic Baytril. She is eating a small amount of baby food. But, her breathing is erratic and I thought she was going to pass while I was holding her.
I called my h at work early this am and he told me to wait.
