Okay sorry that was so long
Yorkshire terriers are prone to liver shunts, and other lovely things. See this link:

Shih Tzus are prone to many eye poblems, skin problems and cysts.

Hopefully your dog will be healthy, but I would be watchful for these things considering where that pup came from.

If you have a Petsmart in your area, check if they have "By Nature" brand puppy food. It is a pretty good brand and one of the best ones available at Petsmart stores. It is also one of the smallest sized kibbles I have seen as far as the size of the pieces goes.

Some other good brands that have small size pieces:
Wysong Synorgen
Nature's Variety Prairie or Instinct
Innova

Good luck on the housetraining. With a pet shop puppy it is often VERY difficult because they learn to use the cage at the pet store as a potty. This means that they often don't have any qualms about using any place as a potty sometimes including their bed... It also means crate training often doesn't work.

I wouldnt hit him at all, even a swat. Telling him a firm No and removing him from that area. He will be able to tell in your voice what No means.

Im almost half tempted by the replies of different dog food to start a poll!! I want him to have the best nutrition possible, I know that he is probably going to be sickly because he was in a puppy mill, but I want to do right by him, he didn't ask to be born there or a mutt! I dont care what the food costs just as long as its good for the little dude!!

Some people have told me to swat and on here they say no, so I dont know!
Some people rub their noses in it and it gets all up in their nostrils and thats just wrong! So far he hasn't had an accident since then (so my step mom says, Im at a funeral so she has him) and I barely swatted him, it was a light tap but he's so small you dont really know if it would hurt worse or not! So I just wont swat no more!

I have internet so I can get dog food anywhere on the net, I would just like to know if there is any one dog food that the majority use?? With the list I got now I could be going through bag upon bag upon bag of dog food!

Thanks guys! You're great!

Oh no.... don't start a poll.
Ask ten different dog owners what they feed and you get 12 different answers. So much depends on the type of dog and activity level and the individual. I say if there were only one right answer, we'd all be feeding the same thing by now. Since we're not, there are different options and no one right answer.
Just my opinion....

Izzy was initially eating Premium Edge, but didn't do well on it. Switched to Blue buffalo, I think.

I can't get Blue buffalo unless I order it....and the kibble was too big for her mouth. So I got Diamond Naturals Small Breed Puppy. The kibble is smaller than pea sized. So far, she's done well on it. So that's what I'll stick with for her.

Exactly ,
.. Plus just like cats some dogs do fine on what many would call low end premium while others need to have the $$$ food to do well

Yeah, I just want him to eat what Im feeding him! I think Im going to see if the new stuff hes got is better, but I have to give it a couple a weeks before I switch him again!

I got him all groomed and pretty for when I took him to the babysitter so I go to the funeral! When I came back he was swimming in a mud puddle with a giant lab!!
That teach me for getting him all pretty'd up!! So he was a mess when I brought him home but thats okay he had fun!!

He's been a really good boy so far, so I think he's been pretty great!!

Please never swat a dog. Positive reiforcment is what will get a dog to listen to you.

You may need to crate train him if you want him to be housebroken. I hate those pee pads..they are useless imo because its teaching them its okay to go INSIDE the house.

As for food, I feed my dogs and cats Kirkland Signature (Costco brand) its a very good food, and a lot of people swear by it. And its relatively cheap. We used to feed crap food, and once we switched over to that (Been a few years now) our animals coats became amazing! I recommend it, and it comes in Puppy.

And I won't even go into how much I hate people who breed mutts, and puppy mills. Ick!

I only swatted him the one time, and I guess I was treating him more like a kid that a dog! As for the food thing Im about ready just to give up and let him have the cat food! At least he likes that! I dont want to do what my grandma does and put ice cream or cottage cheese on his foods because I dont think thats really healthy, but I know its not healthy to have cat food either so Im working on it! I will find a food he likes! I have 6 different kinds of dry kibble so far and he hates them all! I have quite a few of soft too, but he doesn't like that either! The kind he likes is pedigree puppy and I dont know about the quality for that... Im pretty sure there isn't any quality ingredients involved! I want to feed him stuff that I myself might eat. I might have to try a couple recipes of my own, I havn't made dog food since I was a kid but the dogs always liked the one recipe I had, I always thought of it as slump though... the smell will never leave my nostrils!

Try some nutro puppy. All four of my dogs love the taste of Nutro. Yeah cat food is horribly bad for puppies so don't give it to him.

I thought cat food was horrible for dogs but wasn't quite sure! I can't remember what kind of food it was that was for dogs and cats and was UTI safe... It was a link someone gave me one time and its something you have to order off the net but It would be well worth it I think!!

An occasionaly nibble on the other's food won't hurt, but a steady diet will. Cats need more protein then dogs, so don't let the dog eat a lot of the cat food.

I feed canned in the evening for the cats. Keno gets a little bit of the canned food left on the spoon before its washed - that's her extent of "cat food".

might've been Wysong - they have several that are 'canine/feline' labeled.

So I got my shorky groomed the other day, and she told me she was going to take half the length of his hair off, I was like Okay, that sounds good. So I come back and he has got maybe a half inch of hair left and he should have had 2 inches of hair length left! She told me she took him outside to go potty and when she brought him in he was so hot that she decided he needed to be groomed a little bit more! So all of his hair is gone on his body, she left the tail and some on the face but she did get it out of his eyes! He looks so cute! But at least before he looked like he weighed a little more than 4lbs, now you look at him and he just looks so tiny! Just like a sissy lala instead of the tough doggy he is!! He has 3 shirts now, one is a hoodie that came with him, the other one says "Save the Ta Ta's" (I support any kind of breast cancer fun, everything I own is pink and says something about breastcancer, right down to my pens and my can opener) and then my grandma got him a shirt that says "Chick Magnent"!!
He looks so cute, but now when I take him out and its still chilly out he gets so cold that he has to wear one, when before I could take him out naked without a problem! Ill post pics tomarrow probably, right now Im pretty tired, I have 5 kids here right now, 3 of my own, then an extra 5 year old and a 6 month old whos mother forgot to bring all his important stuff with him, so its been a nightmare! And she was suppose to pick him up 2 hours ago... Did I mention she never pays me for babysitting?? He's a lover though, six months old and 25 pounds!! Ahh Im rambling!
