My foster is supposed to take Dasuquin each day for his arthritis. The problem is that he won't eat any food, wet or dry, with the powder sprinkled on it.

Can the capsules be given directly instead of opening them to sprinkle on his food? He's not a joy to pill, but I could be sure he was getting it that way.

I'd call the vet to check. Sometimes, if you give them the capsules, it doesn't work in their body right, get absored right.

I called them. The capsule is a bit large, but they said if I can get them down him, its fine to do it that way.

He just won't eat anything with the powder on it, or mixed in. He's not a wet food fan to start with so that doesn't tempt him and I don't want to use tuna or something that isn't good for him to have since he has to have this supplement every day, probably for life.

Do you think it would fit into pill pockets?

If not, I butter capsules before giving them to the dogs. Macey's on a pill a day for her hip issues, so I just butter it & cram it in her mouth!

I'm not sure he would eat a pill pocket. He has shown no interest in any of Riley's treats that I've tried to give him.

I may try to dip it in some salmon oil, or wet food though to make it go down easier. Not sure if he should have butter? lol

I can get some Fancy Feast or other junk food this weekend to see if he will take it with that. Maybe he just doesn't like Riley's quality food?

watch it w/the oil - some oils will basically 'melt' some capsule coverings.
butter has enough water in it that probably wouldn't happen... altho i've never buttered a cap, just a tab.
& it's such a small amount of butter, it won't hurt him any!

Macey's currently on some capsules in addition to her regular meds - anti-biotics. I butter them, she gets 2 large ones 2x a day. They don't melt the capsule (which is something I never thought of!).

Never thought of it melting the capsule! Maybe I will try the butter after all. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm going to try the FF before I try to pill him. This is the cat who had to go to the vet and get the "bad kitty" restraints and muzzle to get his claws trimmed
