Hello,

I have a problem going on for 5 months. The cat Persian/Himalayan, big and fluffy, good boy, but every time I need to clean him after the poop.
I checked him 2 or 3 times for any parasites - nothing, he got dewormed 2 or 3 times, I tried different cat food (Purina, Since diet, Friskies (the same Purina) - all the same, he got soft poop and long pants, and wet butt almost every day - I have to wash him.
I have also Himalayan cat, 1.5 year old - no problems with him at all.

I found, the cat food with yogurt was the bad stuff; they were puking in the morning and passing gas all day long. OK - changed to Chicken formula, no yogurt, and adult.

The same - soft poop. Don't know what to do. Maybe it's the breed? I know, all healthy cat food is a big trick, and there is nothing healthy in it, but maybe someone has any idea or advice? Well, I did not try to cook for cat, maybe I should, but then what to cook? I found in this forum - there should not be any meet? Then what? Cannot catch mice outside...

Thank you all!
Have a great day and safe pet food (as much as possible :-)!

Forgot something : he is very big , 7 months now, eating very often, and sometimes there is a blood in the poop, not much, just a little, not every time, in the "end of the process". Went to VET (it was the same as talk to myself in the mirror...).
Other then that - cat is OK, playing, running, purring, all normal.
I am thinking, it will be tough to wash the cat every other day for 12-15 more years...

It sounds like you're switching his food too much. Cats do better on a consistent diet and if you change it too often or too quickly they will get diarrhea and sometimes vomit. You may also consider putting him on a food with less corn, by-products, colorants etc. I'm not sure where you read that there should not be meat in the cats diet (??) as that's the opposite of the truth but there's no need to think you need to home-cook yet. If you want to stick with kibble, my suggestion would be to try a higher quality food, like Innova, Evo, Wellness, Nature's Variety, Felidae, etc. But no matter what food you decide to feed you need to stick with just one. If you decide to change foods the transition should take place over the course of a week or more slowly adding more new food each day while decreasing the old food to lessen the chances of making the cat ill.

Poor kitty! It must be uncomfortable to have poopy butt.

Seriously, I also think you may be changing the foods too often. Changing wet food abruptly usually isn't a problem, but when changing dry food you should do it gradually over a week to 10 days, gradually adding the new food to what you are currently feeding. Even then you will need to give kitty's tummy time to adjust to the new food.

Also, you can take him to a groomer or your vet to have his butt shaved a bit which will help both of you.

As for the meat question - goodness, I have no idea where you read that they shouldn't have meat. Cats are obligate carnivores and most certainly do need meat.

Sharky has listed some quality foods in a number of threads on this site, but the main thing is read the labels and look for foods with NO by-products, colouring added and with few grains.

If you have more questions, come on back!

Thank you all!

About meat : I found it in the (forgot already the name), but something about the food, starting "WOW!...."
"
Beef, corn or wheat may create problems with your petâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s digestive system, skin and coat.*
"

I felt like an idiot, because I know , cats needs meet. Any way - about the food : yes, I did not know the kitty will be adjusting to food for a long time, so far they are eating this Chicken brand around 2 weeks... I guess I need to stay on it, well - they need to stay on it

OK, I will try to keep the same for month, hopefully it will work, and YES - I changed it before too soon, there was a panic 'what is going on" - and I tried
couple different brands during 10 days or 2 weeks, silly me...

but the other cat was OK! that confused me. Maybe he was OK because he is adult, and this one is still kitten.

OK, Thanks again!
About "to shave" the complicated place : yes, I thought about that, but he is very big and strong, and screaming like a fire truck...I thought to make it myself. I don't want VET to squeeze him like a lemon. Any way - I will find the way.

Have a great day everybody!

Those foods, among other things are known to be common allergens for cats, but cats are carnivores so they do need meat.

If you're trying out a food to see if it agrees with your cats they should stay on that food for a minimum of 8 weeks.

It does actually depend on your cat. I change our 2 over abruptly with no litter box issues at all so I've been lucky.

You'll often find cats have an allergy to chicken and corn before beef. Duck and rabbit are often recommended for kitties with chicken allergies.

Beef, corn, wheat is a DOG
...

COmmon cat is Fish , wheat, soy ...

Some kitties need a "hygene trim" in that region to stay clean and tidy ....

If gas is a issue avoid SOY, chicken ( this is hard as most substitues are also poultry), wheat and animal by products

Thanks to all!
I had no idea about allergy on chicken. What if this is the case?! Should I try little by little the new food, like Tuna/Salmon brand or keep him on Chicken for another couple weeks and see (well, with "hygene trim" )?

I will probably keep 2 weeks more, then add Fish a little.

So far I am using Purina.

Thanks again!

Can not attach the picture of Bars.

A chicken allergy is probably not the case, as you say you're changing his food quite a bit and that is probably his issue. Your cat should stay on one food, and only one food, for at least 8 weeks to see how he does. IF he still has problems you may try to figure out if he has an allergy, but even then it is one food only for 8 weeks minimum, no treats or anything because then you would have to start the entire 8 weeks over again. Also know that almost every flavor of dry food still contains chicken.

Well, it's still a problem, he is on the same food almost 2 months, still soft poop. We have another kitten, and I gave the kitten a different food, Bars got diarrhea. 2 reasons : stress or he got the kitty's food?
I checked other articles, it could be that parasite, which is hard to find? then my guess is : if it's hard to find any way, can we just get a treat , if it's there - it will die, if not - there should not be harm for the cat any way.

I am not changing the food any more, I think since the end of March...
The thing is : VETS can not find anything and can not do anything, and cat is suffering, and all food are with 100 ingredients and there is no way to get out from this circle.

I will keep him on the same for one more month, then what?

If he's not better in a month, I would try a food with less filler ingredients. Purina contains poultry by-product meal, corn meal, brewers rice, corn gluten meal, and soy flour. These are inexpensive filler ingredients. Soy also causes big problems for cats.

This might seem an odd question...Are you feeding a hairball or indoor formula?

My one cat who is a Muchkin, but Persian mix in there ( kitty in my signature), gets the "poopy pantaloons" whenever I tried to feed a hairball formula food. It could feed the same brand non-hairball formula. I don't feed commercial food anymore and never have had a problem since.

Just a thought to try staying away from hairball formulas and see if that helps.

I also agree with Sharky about the "hygiene trim". I kept Stomper clipped around that area for a long time.

Have you specifically asked the Vets about IBD? with the occasional blood in there and no worms ( especially hookworms which are hard to get rid of) IBD my be an issue. If so do some reading on Catinfo.org about how a raw diet helps IBD cats. Of course don't think of switching without veterinary guidance ( I get the feeling you know this, but I have to add that statement for others who might not

OK, thanks to all!
Yes, I think Purina is failed to be a good cat food, I checked the ingredients - everything you can think about. I don't think it's right. So, I will keep him for a couple weeks more and then I need to switch to the different food.
Whiteforest - can you advise anything? also if anybody else can give me any idea - will be great! I tried Science diet - I think it's crap.
Before, like 5 years ago, there was Friskies - was not bad, but I think it purchased by Purina now or it changes the formula.

We (well, I ) did a pants trim! it's better! I thought about that before, but was hoping every time for the better results.

Now, one more, I want to ask VET about that...parasite (keep forgetting the name!) treatment and if it has ANY side effects? do you know, can I give it to the cat without knowing if the cat has that... worms. I think it should be OK, if they are there - they will die.

Thanks again! it's so great to have a forum friends who is helping!

Have a great day!

If you think your cat may have worms you should bring a stool sample in to your vet. They can check for parasites among other things that may be causing his diarrhea. I don't recommend treating him with over-the-counter wormers as they can cause more harm than good.

For food recommendations, Sharky's best at that. If you're asking me, you might try California Naturals; it's supposed to be good for cats with sensitive stomachs. Other brands I favor are Nature's Variety, Wellness, Felidae, Orijen, maybe Royal Canin. Just remember to buy the regular formulas, NOT indoor or hairball.

Ok, the food is not indoor or hairball, kinda regular , but with chicken.
VET - yes, I got the stool sample, they did not find anything (3 weeks ago), but in the article about Diarrhea someone told , that worm is hard to find, and VET told me the same , so I am guessing – to give it to cat (not over the counter stuff, but from the VET) just to be sure.

I can tell, itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s somewhere in the end of the…process, like he is finishing his “pooping†with the little blood in it, so, something is more deep inside the cat is not good. Sometimes, he is doing OK, well, soft, but no blood, but then after 5 minutes he is coming back to the box and finishing “bloody workâ€. He was a little better after dewormers! Yes, for a couple days he was OK, then again.

Sharky, could you advise the food brand? Well, I hope it is exist in WNY.

I had something similar with the dog, in October. Dog was treated, dog looks OK after that, Bars came in November… can it be related? The same style of “poopingâ€. Well, we are like the “poop specialists†here

Thank you all!

Oh, forgot to ask :
"Have you specifically asked the Vets about IBD? "

what is IBD?

I think you are thinking about Giardia, which is a protozoa not an actual worm. It is really easy to transmit and hard to get rid of. It usually causes on and off diarrhea. The other is coccidia.

IBD is irritable bowel disease. I am not sure if it is prevalent in Persians or not, but it can happen in any breed or age cat. I am sure there are older posts here about IBD, just do a search for it.

If you google "IBD in cats" you will get some good general articles that explain the illness.

There are also some cats which are just super sensitive to foods. Many Bengals get chronic diarrhea and do better on grain frees or raw diets.
