A few weeks ago we took Pepper to the vet because she had a lot of gunk in her ear. The doctor gave us some medicine and some cleaner to put in her ear. We used everything as directed and then took her back to the vet for a follow up. They said she looked fine. Now it's coming back, though. The other night I noticed her shaking her head a lot so I looked at her ear and there was a TON of runny brown stuff in it. I gently got it out with a q-tip then used the cleaner and some of the drops we had left. I've been using it ever since. I just don't understand why it won't go away. What causes this?

Ramsay has an issue with chronic ear infections. He had them for two years straight no matter what we did. He'd go between yeast infections and bacterial infections, and always had that brown gunk that looked like ear mites. I don't know what causes them, nor did my vets. (When Dr. Jean was on she suggest it was allergy related, but who knows.) Anyway, ask your vet to prescribe Zymox w/hydrocortisone drops for your kitty. I believe it's an enzymatic ear cleaner, as opposed to an antibiotic, and Ramsay has been infection free for months now. We tested again a few times between January and March because we couldn't believe it! It is the only thing that worked, and I'm pretty sure we tried everything as our vet finally said if the Zymox doesn't work, he'll have to be anesthetized to have his ear canal flushed.

Edit: I guess it's not even a prescription. You can get it here: http://www.1800petmeds.com/Zymox+Otic-prod10622.html
