How old should the kittens be, before you start weaning them from momma cat, and when you can start feeding them kitten food??

I was thinking around 4 weeks too, but I wasn't sure.

Well, I reckon I'll have to add kitten food to the shopping list when we do our errands on Thursday.

Thanks for responding, Sadosi.

If they are nursing from mom and are content and not crying or acting hungry, they probably won't show much interest in solid foods till 6 weeks. Sometimes you might get one or two interested at 5 weeks, but its a lot less frustration to wait another 2 weeks to attempt to start them on solid foods.

When you do, I find the best thing is canned kitten food that is made soupy with warm water and a little KMR and you kinda put some on your fingers and put it in their mouth to get used to the taste. Once they do, feed them on a shallow plate and on a washable surface. You might have to kinda push their mouth/chin in a few times before they start tasting it.

The mother cat should have been eating high quality kitten food from the moment you found out she was pregnant. It should be available to her at all times. Is she not eating kitten food? She will show her babies and allow them to join her when she feels ready and the kittens are also ready. Some may start around 4-5 weeks, some might not until 7 weeks. It doesn't really matter, no need to really intervene either, just observe and make she momma is doing her job and all the kittens are eating.
