A very simple thing to try (and works pretty good - from allergic people) is wiping the cats down daily with DISTILLED drinking water - has to be distilled and not just filtered water.

Also a few other things you need to do:

1. Try not to have a lot of rugs on the floors - less rugs the better as you can clean the fur from the bare floors a lot better then rugs/carpet.

2. Use the HEPA filters in the vacuum and a/c.

3. Keep the cats out of the bedroom.

4. Wash your hands after petting the cats and keep them away from your face/eyes.

While any cat with fur will shed and can cause reactions, some breeds are less shedding or cause reactions. You are more allergic to the saliva and dander then the loose fur. BTW keep the cats combed often to lessen the amount of fur in the air.

I am very Allergic to Cats and what Golden said is right. The person is probaly Allergic to more then Cats. I was told to remove the Carpet and get rid of the Cats I refused to get rid of them. I used to take the Shots but do not anymore.

My partner, Kyle, is allergic to lots of things, cats included, and he also has asthma. (I think he was one of those "sick kids" growing up who's mom made them sit out of everything.)

We use HEPA filters in the air conditioner and we have a Hunter QuietFlo air purifier (this one looks more advanced than ours) that seems to work well. It's not too expensive, and we can move it from room to room easily.

We have hardwood floors now, but in our previous apartment, we had carpet. Personally, I preferred the carpet, because it was easier to keep clean. With the hardwood floors, no matter how much I sweep, there's still fur all over the place.

The other thing to try is to drink lots and lots of orange juice (well, vitamin C, really). That seems to help too. Get the one with lots of pulp--it's better for you.

That's all I got. Hope it helps.

You can get air filters for as low as $50. Check Walmart and shop around.

Sounds like my husband! Asthma, allergies...the whole lot. He grew up with cats, however, so he is used to dealing with it, but still.

What we do to prevent it getting to out of control is lots of cleaning and vacuuming, very few rugs/carpets (we too have hardwood) and my husband opens the bedroom window at night (the cats don't sleep in our room at night). He says it helps. All the other tips on here are great though - when his allergies start acting up, I will try some of them out.

I became allergic to cats (for a while) around the age of 20 -- having grown up with cats since a baby. I developed asthma as a result and was told to get rid of the cat quickly -- as if!!!!

I read up loads about it and it might not help your housemate who might not be willing to do all of the things, but for anyone else who might want a go:

- I gave up lots of stimulants / other common allergic things, esp. cafeine -- can't remember all, but we are all under attack by allergens so if we lessen the threat of some, then we can deal better with the major problem.

- I drank camomile tea -- a good relaxent and apparently good for the lungs (?) -- or something (finding it hard to remember all the things)

-- I applied an aromatherapy rub to my chest and back -- again to helt the airways

- I did loads of cardiovascular exercise (especially swimming) to help my lungs

- and of course lots of vacuuming and cleaning

- if the cat will tolerate being washed - do so; most people are allergic to their dust and not their fur.

This all really helped and within 6-12 months I never used my asthma inhalers again. I am still slightly allergic to cats, but this usually realises itself in skin hives now if I get a claw in me.

Hope this helps

I am allergic to everything with fur. I had one allergist who told me, every time I went in, to get rid of the animals. As soon as I was old enough to make my own choices, I fired his butt and chose another guy. I told this guy flat out "Living without animals is not an option. This is my life, make it work."

So now I am heavily medicated, and spend $50 a month on those meds, but I have very little in the way of reactions.
Just another pet expense but I wouldn't have it any other way.

It sounds to me though, that the person you are living with is not going to be willing to budge on this... so if I were you, I'd find another place to live where the cats will be welcome.
