Not sure how to put the heading for this one. My Mom has a dog that's 10 and a half years old and she has another dog that's about 9 years old. Her oldest, Sparky, has been diagnosed with an aggresive type of cancer and tonight will be his last night at home. Her question is, how long should she let Fancy around his remains before burying him?

Fancy knows something is wrong as she doesn't act the same around Sparky. Mom figures it would do Fancy good to see Sparkys body.

Thanks for any help/advice on this.

If one of my animals passes away, I let the other animals sniff the body as long as they want to. Usually they will walk away after a few minutes. That, to me, is a sign of their acceptance and understanding of what has happened.

Thank you. That is what she thought as well but wasn't sure. I'll let her know.

When our dog, Diamond got hit and killed in front of the house on the highway, we brought the body back and had it on a board till the coffin was finished by DH and his brother.

The barn cats came up to say their goodbyes to Diamond.

I'd let the dog have a few mins with the body and then bury him. I'm sorry to hear about your mom's loss.
