Question *Warning May be a Brain Teaser*

I came across a question that took me DAYS to answer, or at least come up with A answer.

The question is: What happens when an irresistable force meets an immovable object?

I think I've got a possible answer but before I post it I want to know what everyone else thinks the answer is.

I haven't copied the question word for word, just posted the general gist of it.

The irresistable force is drawn to the immovable object via gravity. Kind of like a planet being sucked into a black hole.

On the other hand, if you are talking about people, the irresistable force could be repelled by the immovable object, as irresistable forces rarely get rejected and would probably just walk away.

The question could refer to whatever you want it to refer to.

This is a very old question probably first debated by Plato. So yup, you can answer it however your mind works.

The answer is 42!

"And thanks for all the fish."

However, ultimately, no force is irresistable, and no object is immovable. The answer is that for very large bodies, a significant portion of the mass of both will be converted into energy, the irresistable force will give up much of it's power, and the immovable object will move.

It's like the chicken and egg question I think.

Sheesh! I just woke up and shuffled bleary-eyed out to the computer... and this is what you give me to contemplate on a sleepy Sunday morning? I'm a great aficionado of theoretical physics, but... not at this hour!

Anyway, the answer is:

"You can bet as sure as you live
Somethin's gotta give,
Somethin's gotta give,
Somethin's gotta give."

i don't know the context, so this may not be germane - but that line is a quote from a song.
When an irresistible force such as you
Meets an old immovable object like me
You can bet as sure as you live
Something's gotta give, something's gotta give,
Something's gotta give.

Its not possible for both to exist....
if there is an immovable object, then there can be no irresistible force, and if there is an irresistible force, no object is immovable.
So nothing could happen as the situation could never exist

I think that would be defined as a HUGE crash! Ouch!

Thats what I was thinking

Both the irresistable force and the immoveable object would crash and cancel eachother out.

What I think is that, if it was to happen, the irresistable force would go round the immovable object.

That's the conclusion I (eventually - a few days later) came up with

But if it just went around it, it's resistible now.

Nothing. Both cannot exist in the same space. So there's not explosion or anything, just an immediate negation of (likely) both.

True, but if the object can't move then the force can't go through it!

Yes, but if the force is irresistible, that object would have no chance.

True, but ... why are we arguing?
I am not so sure on that question.

But I do know what happens when the unstopable force meets the unmoveable object, A gnome dies...

Obviously, the universe implodes. Kinda like when God creates a rock he can't lift.

irresistable force - something that acts with a gravitational pull..... question is what is creaating the force in the first place? Black hole? Planetary body?
immovable object - something that doesn't move. period.

Sooo.... nothing? If anything I would guess at the immovable object gets hot. Gravity can do that.

Who came up with this anyway... and why don't they have anything better to do with their time?
