My kitty might have to go on Hill's Prescription Diet C/D as a result of FLUTD. Anyone knows a similar product not made by Hills?

thanks sharky!

In your opinion, should I just go with my vet's recommendation or switch to other brands mentioned? I know that SD is a bunch of craps but wht aby their Prescription diet? I checked the ingredients .. Pork by product is listed number one, lots of grains, corn gluten meal, brewers rice and flavoring .. chicken liver flavor .. does that mean not real liver but artificial flavor?

Ok..will try it. Just that she has never eaten any by product meal and those other nasty stuffs before. Just felt strange why a prescription diet can't have better ingredients.

I know but they have a purpose.. and just start researching so you can talk with the vet and see if this has to be a permanent diet ...

My Vet recommended Hill's Prescription T/D formula for my cats teeth. It is marble sized so it helpful to clear the tartar off when they crunch into it.

But for the price, $40 for 10 lbs, and the poor quality of ingredients.....I was very disappointed. Only meat protein source is chicken by-product meal..for heaven's sake. Not even pure chicken.

I switched to Wellness...much better ingredients......but of course, my cat has no other health issues such as FLUTD....

Like Sharky said...the food does have a purpose and you want your kitty to feel better..so I would take the Vet's advice until you can find a better quality food that will do the same Rx for you precious kitty.

I have to add...I kept them on the T/D for a year....and her teeth are perfect and free of tartar....so the food did the teeth some good.....regarding her nutrition---->I don't know.
(I keep saying them, and her..because I lost a kitty last month, but he ate the same food)

Good luck with your kitty

My vet personally doesn't prescribe prescription food for cystitis, she prefers wet food only, more water in their diet and less stress. My foster with stress related cystitis also had a supplement to help the lining of his bladder - that and wet food only did work wonders. I have a cat with CRF and I think the ingredients on that are poor, so think I am going to go with a mainly chicken diet for her (found some complete chicken food).

Thanks!

I am quite happy with this new vet actually because the old vet has his office stock up with SD! Phew! But at this vet, he has many different products but not SD except Hill's Prescription. I will voice my concern however and lets see if we can find a better alternative. He's quite impressed that I know so much about feline nutrition and has been feeding my girl really well. Even when he came up with FLUTD, he said it's unusual because my girl is eating wet and not dry.

Oh, more details about her condition here:-

It's really depressing:-

My Cat is on C/D and has been for over a year and a half. She was on S/D only for 2 Months to get rid of her Bladder Stones. I tried to take her off C/D before but everytime the problem came back. I am going to ask the Vet if I can use another Can Food. Sharky sent me a site about another Can Food. Coco will stay on the dry C/D though/

If you are comfortable with this vet then stick with it and in the meantime just research and be pushy.
I almost lost Mary and it was too much to bear. Every vet kept telling me to bring her home there is nothing more we can do. I kept bringing her home and she kept hiding and not eating. Eventually I told the hospital to keep her until she eats solidly and you have tried everything. I would not let them tell me anymore what to do. I saw my girl slipping and I know how tough she is.
Mary is one of the 10 percent of cats exposed to distemper that lives.

That experience changed my attitude toward vets. Not all are created equal. Some are older with more experience but burned out others are young and cutting edge but with no long term experience.

Second opinion are great if you can afford it.

Thank you all for your replies. My kitty's condition has improved tremendously and after speaking to the vet, no diet change is necessary! It seems that Idiopathic FLUTD resolve itself over time but I am to still monitor her litter box habits.

I am thinking of going over to a holistic pet store to find out if there is some remedy that I could use to encourage faster recovery. There's this store here which comes highly recommended and I would love to talk to the owner and see what can be done.

In the UK, there are supplements that help the lining of the bladder, and you can also use cranberry to help soothe things, if your cat will take them.

My cat had bladder problem for a couple of years. She was eating Wellness wet and dry food. I finally switched her solely to wet food and bought a fountain for her. She did ok for a few months then got very sick. She started peeing blood and crying all the time. She had to have a huge stone removed. We went through months of antibiotics and other meds. It was a nightmare!!! After that I finally took my Vets advice and got Hills c/d. It has been 2 years and she is doing great. She has gained weight and is more playful. She is a different cat. I know a few people that have had the same issues in their cat and switching to this food has helped. I also have read way too many other reviews where cats were feed Wellness food and cats developed these issues. Keep that in mind.
