We got Silvie as a stray when I was 11, in 1991. We estimated her to be about a year old at that time.

She was a great cat- petite and ladylike, but didn't put up with any crap from anyone. She was always friendly, especially with men, but specifically my dad. She always greeted him when he came home from work and followed him up to bed every night.

She'd obviously been in her twilight years recently. A lot less spry, lost some weight and it was a little harder for her to get around. The first week of April, she was suddenly listing to one side, wasn't eating or drinking and would just freeze in one position some times. My parents took her to the vet the next day and they said she'd probably had a stroke. My parents suspected that was the case and had gone in there with the intention of putting her down, but she really seemed to have some fight left in her and the vet agreed. They gave her some IV fluids and a shot of steroids to make her more comfortable and my parents took her home.

For the past couple of weeks, she plodded on, but this past Sunday, my mom said she wasn't doing well again. My mom left to go out of town the next day and without her to be the voice of reason, it was really hard for my dad to accept that he needed to make the appointment to have her euthanized.

Until yesterday. He made the appointment for this morning and he called me on my way to work and said that there was now further proof that she was the greatest cat in the world- she died naturally during the two minute car ride from their house to the vet's office, saving my dad from having to make the final choice.

I'm so sorry to hear about Silvie.

Thank you for sharing her story - it's clear Silvie held a special place in your family. Your folks obviously loved her and tried to keep her going. Since she had a special attachment to your Dad (how sweet that she greeted him when he came home!), it seems fitting that she passed away while she was with him.

Silvie was a lucky girl to have found a family that would love her forever. My condolences to you and your parents on the loss of your precious Silvie.

PS- Thanks for posting her pictures - she was a beautiful girl with a lovely name.

Thanks everyone!

We would always say she had owl eyes- very serious, straight-across brow.
