I have 2 ceramic bowls and 2 stainless steel bowls for dry or wet food. I like the ceramic ones b/c they're pretty! Shermie's matches his mat (it was his 1 yr b-day gift. LOL). Luna's used to match her mat, but then i broke it =( i'm a bad mom. haha. i usually soak the wet food bowls over night then scrub w/ hot water and soap in the morning. Shermie's dry food bowl is metal and gets washed once a week ish. I also scrub the crap out of my drinkwell fountain every week or so. And that thing gets gross w/o a filter (my pet store has been out of refills for weeks).

I use ceramic bowls for dry and ceramic saucers for wet. I don't refill the wet because they get yucky but will refill the dry a couple of times. All go into the dishwasher. I have more saucers and bowls in there for the cats than for myself. In thinking about it I should also use the bowls only once. Water is also in a ceramic bowl which gets washed daily, only one cat drinks out of it. The other prefers to use a mason jar which is on the sink with plant cuttings. I do change the water occasionally.

i use 'people' bowls & saucers... altho i myself eat off of disposable plates. anyway, if they're sold for people to use, i know they're ok lead-content-wise. currently, i have 4 square bowls for dry, & 1 different one [didn't expect to get a 5th cat!] & 3 matching salad plates for wet, plus 2 other salad plates & a couple of saucers.
the dry food bowls don't get cleaned as often as the wet - mostly 'cause there always seems to be food in them!
we have 3 fountains, all of which currently need cleaning - 1 drinkwell, 1 dog-sized freshflow, & one cat-sized freshflow. i don't use filters, because i add lysine to the water. cleaning them is a pain because of this, but Pixel's done much better since i started doing it.

ETA: all dishes sit on trays w/sides - helps cut down on the kibble flying around the kitchen

I use stainless steel bowls for the dry food and water bowls. For canned food I have a few ceramic pet dishes but I mostly use ceramic saucers from our dinnerware set and they they go in the dishwasher.
Plastic bowls harbor bacteria, they are difficult to clean well enough and scratch easily.

Stainless Steel is good.

I think the most important thing really is to clean the dishes between feedings. I wouldn't re-use my own plate from breakfast for my dinner so I don't expect my cats to either. It just isn't sanitary.

If you have a cat prone to acne, getting rid of plastic is definitely a must.
I am going to print this off to show my mother so she will stop waggling her eyes at me when she sees me do this. Stainless steel ones are not that expensive. They clean easily too. I used to use cute little ceramic ones until they broke and I was fed up with them breaking.

I use the plain white Corelle salad plates for the girls' wet food. I use a clean plate for every feeding. They get washed with the regular dishes in hot soapy water, and dry in the dish rack. They only get about a tablespoon of dry food occasionally (Hills k/d renal food) as a treat...this just gets sprinkled on the rug, and they literally vacuum it up!

I just had my cat at the vet's Monday for chin acne. He likes to drink out of the dog's water bowl, which is plastic. I promptly replaced it with stainless. I also bought a set of pyrex custard bowls for the cats' dry food. They are a little larger than normal custard bowls, and were only $5 for a set of four at Target. The vet said stainless and Pyrex are the best choices, but it must be PYREX (the kind you can bake in the oven), not regular glass.

Someone told me they got stainless bowls at the dollar store for, you guessed it - $1! I'm heading to the dollar store after work for more.

That's where I got mine and also why I have so many - the price was right.

Hmm. for the dry i have some bowls by petmate.. rarely is their a need to wash them.

for wet i have some plate styles with a rubber bottom from petstages brand.. they are dishwasher safe but i usually just wipe them down, or use basic dishsoap and hand wash them.

water? um, i have a drinkwell fountain and a petmate water bottle type bowl.. i clean them out often but without soap.

I'd have to disagree with this statement. Dry food can and does go rancid so the stuff they spray on dry food to attract cats is sitting there going rancid and building up bacteria.

My cats get clean bowls at each feeding (wet or dry). Every dry food I've ever fed -and we've had quite a few different ones over the years- leaves a residue in the bowl, and there are tiny crumbs. You can really see it when I use the white Corelle bowls.
