Hi all,

I need some input on the quality of Performatrin, which is the brand sold by a pet supply chain in Canada.

I will have the kittens on Wellness dry, kitten formula (well, partially at the moment...still tapering them off the Walmart junk they were being fed when we got them). As adults, I will likely put them on Wellness wet as well. However, the pet store here sells Wellness Kitten wet in 3 oz. cans only. It comes out to a ridiculous price at $1.29/can when I can buy regular Wellness wet at $2.69 for a 12.5 oz. can. It's pretty much twice the price.

I had bought a few big cans of Performatrin kitten for Zoey when I started reading about wet food being better for cats. However, she didn't like it.

After doing a lot more research, I learned more the real quality of some foods, and figured the Performatrin kitten was garbage, and never even thought of feeding it to Belle and Delilah. However, looking at it now, it doesn't look too bad. I can't find it on any of the nutrition charts I have, as it is a Canadian brand.

Any input would be great. Here is the info:

INGREDIENTS: chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver, egg product, guar gum, menahden fish oil, skim milk, tricalcium phosphate, dried kelp, carrageenan, potassium chlorise, taurine, oregano, inulin, parsley, iron amino acid chelate, rosemary, sage, zinc amino acid chelate, yucca schidigera extract, vitamin e supplement, choline chloride, cobalt amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate, manganese amino acid chelate, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, niacin, sodium selenite, d-calcium pantothenate, vitamin d3 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, vitamin a supplement, potassium iodide, vitamin b12 supplement, biotin.

CALORIE CONTENT: 1500 kcal/Kg 561 kcal/can (13.2 oz)

GUARANTEED ANALYSIS:
Crude Protein: 11.0% MIN
Crude Fat: 7.0% MIN
Crude Fibre: 1.0% MAX
Moisture: 78% MAX
Ash: 2.5% MAX
Calcium: 0.25% MIN
Phosphorus: 0.20% MIN
Magnesium: 0.03% MAX
Taurine: 0;08% MIN

Omega 6 Fatty Acids: 0.8% MIN
Omega 3 Fatty Acids: 0.08% MIN

Does it look decent? I didn't see anything alarming, but I'm not a food guru. It did strike me that there didn't appear to be any grains, like the wellness.

They are fed wet for breakfast and supper and free feed food in between. They are both pretty good eaters, although one seems to favour the wet and the other seems to favour the dry (they do eat both, and probably a decent amount of each). For this reason, I would like them on good dry AND wet foods.

The kitten selection at the store in town seems to be fairly limited. I can't seem to see kitten formulas for any of the other high-end brands...perhaps I just don't know what I'm looking for. I suppose another question to ask is...if they are on the kitten dry food, would I be better off feeding them regular wellness chicken formula for wet (instead of performatrin)?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks Sharky.

It does say "no animal by-products" on the fron of the can on the can. Does that help with the chicken broth?

What do the dark blue highlights in the analysis mean? Good or bad?

I used to feed Performatrin before I changed to Orijen. It's not a bad food but there are better.

the broth issues have nothing to do with animal by products .... the broth likely comes from somewhere other than the meat .... ie it is already made and thus the company making the food may not know what is in it ... I fed lots of foods with broth as they are tastier , just wanted to let you know what I have learned

Do you think the taurine levels are high enough? I had read that they should be about 0.2 %......my Hill's Prescription dry food is at 0.1 %, the Iams Digestive is a t 0.15 %, and the Wellness Holistic is at 0.2 %

Taurine is very important for heart health. Cats with too low levels of taurine can develop heart muscle disease.

BTW, the Hill's Prescription T/D that my Vet recommended is worse in the ingredient department than the Wellness Holistic. I'm switching my cat over..although she is resisting. So I'm mixing the two until she gets used to it. I don't know if the Vet looks at the ingredients..but I was very disappointed when I read the ingredients..only one animal meat protein source.....all the rest...soy. The meat protein was chicken by-product meal. Also, they use the artificial preservatives...(I can't remember their initials at the moment..but they are not recommended).
The price for the two types is exactly the same....

The nice part, and only nice part, about the Hill's is that it is the size of marbles..which is good for clearing the plaque off her teeth. After paying nearly $500 last year to have her teeth cleaned...it has helped. A year on the Hill's, and no plaque at all. But the ingredients really worry me re: her general health.
