Chynna needs a diet low in phosphorus. She absolutely refuses to eat that k/d Feline. I tried both textures, and she absolutely hates it. She gives it a sniff or two and just walks away and won't even touch it. I've tried putting some on her paw and she will wash her paw, but she won't eat the food!!

I know there are phosphorus binders, and I plan on asking the vet about those.

But I also understand that there are commercial foods available in the stores that are considered "low phosphorus" and acceptable for cats with renal problems.

I have been looking at the following links:

http://webpages.charter.net/katkarma/canned.htm

http://www.geocities.com/jmpeerson/CanFoodOld.html

My confusion is what is considered "low phosphorus"? One of those links lists phosphrous by percentage, and the other lists milligrams.

Exactly how many mg is considered "low phosphorus?"

I am thinking that I want to go a low phosphrous store bought food, with a phosphorus binder, because Chynna historically has liked Friskies and Fancy Feast. But since she had her dental surgery she's become Miss Picky and won't eat the grilled Fancy Feast anymore so I want to try some of the Pate style, or even a completely different brand. But I have no clue what percentage or the milligrams to look for on the labels.

I never dealt with milligrams you would need to do some math to get a %...

low for many of us is .9 and below

for some it is .7 and other s like .5 and below

With Kandie whose Phos was normal to low I aimed for .7

Math is not my strongest skill.

What would be the formula that I would use to calculate the percentage?

felinecrf.org is an excellent site which lists the phosphorus content of commercial foods. They recommend a cat with CRF should ideally eat food with a phosphorus content of 0.5% if possible, or at least under 1% if that isn't possible. That's calculated on a dry matter basis. There is also information on the site about how to calculate the content on a dry matter basis. If you have the phosphorus content in mg etc, you'll need to calculate it as a percentage, and then work out the percentage for the dry matter in the food (ie with the moisture removed).

When I feed my CRFers non-renal food, I try to remain below 0.7% DMA (Dry Matter Analysis) of phosphorus. Most of the renal foods are 0.5% DMA and below. I purchase my dried aluminum hydroxide gel powder from Thrivingpets.com ALUMINUM HYDROXIDE
I usually add 1/4 rounded teaspoon of phosphorus binder to a 5.5 oz can of food. I usually feed Hills Science Diet Adult, which has a DMA phosphorus of around 0.7%. I use this CANNED FOOD CHART to choose the foods with the lowest DMA % of phosphorus.
